The Milford Chess Team is looking forward to an exciting 2009-2010 season. The chess team is a part of the Greater Cincinnati Scholastic Chess League (GCSCL). The league is split into two divisions. The level of competition has heated up as Milford will be playing in the black division this year against St. Xavier, Roger Bacon, Moeller, and Elder. At the end of the season the champions of the two divisions will meet head-to-head in a tournament. There is also an individual tournament at the end of the season.
The Chess team includes seven players this year – five varsity and two reserve. Returning players include Matt Frye and Evan Sussell. They are joined on the varsity squad by freshmen Hope Landon, Connor Moroney, and Sean McBride. The two current reserve players are Drew Essig and Brandon Elliott. The young talent is looking to get the new division’s attention early. The team’s goal this year is to gain valuable experience and make it into the playoffs.
