Baseball Season Ends In Heartbreaking Fashion

Posted on: May 20, 2017

The OHSAA Southwest District Championship baseball game between Milford and Centerville boiled down to a battle of pitchers, but ultimately went the way of the Elks as they squeaked out a 2-1, nine-inning victory over the Eagles on Saturday at Western Hills High School. Another stellar season for the Eagles concluded with a 20-11 record and a district runner-up finish.

Milford hurler Mitch Mierke was outstanding through his seven innings on the hill, allowing just one run. The Eagles wasted little time breaking into the score column as senior Sam Dobrowolski drove in a first inning run to stake his team to an early lead.

Mierke was able to keep the Elks off the board until the fifth when they finally knotted the game on a sacrifice fly. Centerville had a chance to go ahead in the seventh before Mierke stranded two runners. The Eagles had their best chance in the eighth getting two runners on with two out, but Centerville wiggled out the jam.

The game, which featured just four hits by each team, finally went the way of Centerville when they loaded the bases and ultimately scored the winning run on an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth.
