Boys Tennis Falls In Sectional Tournament

SETTING THE SCENE:  The postseason for the Eagles ended at the Division I Sectional Tournament, as Milford was unable to advance to the semifinals.  The first round of the tournament took place Thurs., May 10th.  The Eagles end the year 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, an impressive improvement over the 2015 season record of 2-12 and 1-5.

A LOOK BACK:  After changes in venue due to weather, Milford's boys tennis team ended the postseason at the Sectional Tournament.  Originally scheduled for Mason, pairings were moved indoors to the Riverside Racquet Club and Queen City Racquet Club due to another rainy day.

Doubles team Ben Mason and Reed Spencer dominated in the first round, taking the win over Chris Allen and Ahmed Elzubair of Winton Woods 6-0, 6-0.  Despite a late rally, Milford fell to seniors Alec Hoelker and Kelley Peter from Moeller, 6-0, 6-4. 

Seniors Logan Chrislip and Zach Jaquillard advanced from round one with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Harrison' Logan Kucera and Donny Swiecki.  The win earned them a trip to round two where they faced the #2 seed team of Niraj Komatineni and Sean Reid of Mason; Milford lost that match 6-0, 6-0.  Mason also went on to advance to Saturday's final events, where they lost to the #1 seed team from Sycamore in the final.

Holden Owens defeated his first opponent, Joe Distler of Loveland.  Owens advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 win to face the #2 seed Vishnu Srinath of Mason, where he fell to Srinath 6-1, 6-1.  Srinath went on to advance to the finals, where he fell to #1 Regis Liou of Sycamore.

Other first round action; J.Kendall Morehouse lost 6-2, 6-2 to Garrett Lindsey of Lakota West, and Jared Gibson fell to Tamil Scha of Lakota East, 6-2, 6-4.

The Eagles fell Thurs., 5/12 in their last match of the season to Kings, 1-4.  Seniors and 1st doubles team Logan Chrislip and Zach Jaquillard were the lone winners, d. Kings 6-1, 6-2. 

INSIDE THE ECC:  Milford will end the fifth in the ECC, and 5-7 overall.  Turpin will end the year atop the league standings at 5-0, followed by Kings, 5-1.  Rounding out the conference: Walnut Hills (4-1), Anderson (3-3),  Milford (2-4), Loveland (1-5), and Glen Este (0-6).

Holden Owens is fifth in 1st singles wins; J.Kendall Morehouse (2nd singles) is eighth and Jared Gibson (3rd singles) is ranked fifth in wins. Logan Chrislip/Zach Jaquillard are fourth in wins at 1st doubles, and the team of Reed Spencer/Ben Mason remain second in wins in 2nd doubles. 

FINAL POLL WATCH:  Sycamore ended the year in first place in the final week of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll.  Mason, St. Xavier, and the ECC’s Turpin concluded the year in second through fourth, while Moeller reclaimed the fifth position from Walnut Hills, who fell to ninth from fifth.  Kings moved up from seventh to sixth, while Anderson ended the year in ninth.  Milford received seven votes in the final poll.
