With the 2016-17 school year recently completed, the Milford High School Department of Athletics is pleased to recognize eight of its outstanding student-athletes from the Class of 2017 with the announcement of several special awards. The following student-athletes exemplified excellence both in the classroom and in their respective sport(s) throughout their stay at Milford.

OHSAA Scholar Athlete Awards

One male and one female are chosen based on their academic and athletic achievements, with special emphasis on the grade point average of varsity athletes.

  • Daniel Wood – posted a 4.5739 cumulative GPA through the first semester this year; earned four varsity letters in water polo and two in swimming; named honorable mention All-Ohio for water polo.
  • Amanda Zanola – posted a 4.6225 cumulative GPA through the first semester this year; earned three varsity letters in soccer, two in basketball and one in softball; was a two-time All-ECC selection on the soccer field.

OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Awards

One male and one female are chosen after earning a team Milford Sportsmanship Award for honor, integrity and showing concern for others. The Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award is sponsored by the Ohio High School Athletic Association to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. Our two student-athlete winners this year have certainly displayed the characteristics for which this award was designed.

  • Jarod Higgins – earned two career sportsmanship awards and four varsity letters each in water polo and swimming; awarded All-ECC first team and honorable mention accolades for his swimming accomplishments.
  • Taylor Rouse – earned two career sportsmanship awards and one varsity letter each in soccer and track & field.

MHS Most Outstanding Senior Athletes

Every year, one boy and one girl are voted as “Most Outstanding Senior Athlete” by the head coaches of every sport. Number of varsity letters, number of different varsity sports played, accomplishments in their varsity sports and personal character are the focal points of the selection process.

  • Wes Reid – earned seven varsity letters (four for baseball and three for basketball). Wes was a two-time first team all-conference selection on the baseball diamond and won four league titles during his career. He was a member of one overall and two co-ECC title teams in baseball and one co-crown squad on the hardwood. Wes was a part of a basketball team that advanced to the OHSAA District Finals and a regional runner-up squad on the diamond.
  • Tori Gilman – earned six varsity letters (three each in soccer and basketball). She has also earned five individual ECC All-Conference honors during her career, including a first team mention during her senior basketball season, as well as being tabbed all-district second team.
