Murphy Advances To State Wrestling Tournament

Posted on: March 5, 2017

Jimmy Murphy will cap his Milford wrestling career in Columbus, as the senior advanced through the District bracket to earn a trip to the OHSAA Division I State Tournament.

Murphy opened the tournament with a win over Gavin Bell of Beavercreek before taking on Nino Salamone, the #2 seed from Elder who entered the tournament with a 22-3 record on the season. But it was Murphy who advanced, ending with a huge 3-1 sudden victory.

The final two opponents for Murphy were familiar, as he faced both last week at the Sectional tournament. Once again, his win over Harrison’s Hunter Barge earned him a place in the finals, where for a second time he met the #1 seed Zachary Donathan of Mason. Though Donathan came away with the 132# District championship, Murphy had secured his ticket to the upcoming State Tournament.

Sophomore Kobey Bronaugh and freshman Max Ward both advanced to the second day of Districts before losing in consolation rounds. Bronaugh lost a close 5-1 decision to Mason Kleinberg of Springboro, to finish the season with 33 wins. Ward fell in his last match to David Hasty of Stebbins, 11-2, and finishes the season with 13 wins.

LaSalle won the District Championship, just 3.5 points ahead of Elder. Mason, Harrison and Fairfield rounded out the top five team scores. Milford finished tied for 21st with 21 points.
