Reinhart Sectional Runner-Up; Qualifies For District Tennis Tourney

Posted on: October 9, 2016

SETTING THE SCENE:  It was a busy final week for the Lady Eagles, as the regular season wrapped up and the girls tennis team entered the postseason at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament.  Amanda Reinhart, Milford’s first singles ace, continued to dominate and will advance to the OHSAA District Tournament this week.

A LOOK BACK:  The week opened with an away date at Summit Country Day, rescheduled from the previous week.  Two of Milford’s loss came in three sets, and though close Milford lost to Summit, 3-2.   Amanda Reinhart blanked Summit’s Nichifor 6-0, 6-0, and the second doubles duo of Leah Breuer-Emma Neal collected the win over Thomas-Klug of Summit, 6-2, 6-1.  Summit’s Bristow defeated Mallory Faller 6-2, 6-5 at second singles.  At third singles, Milford’s Nicole Spencer took the first set but fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, and though they fought back in set two with a 7-5 win, Walton-Cummings d. Eagles Claire LeFrance-Emme Thomas 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in first doubles.

The MHS girls tennis team honored seniors Malory Faller, Claire LaFrance, and Nicole Spencer, and their parents, prior to the final match at home with Oak Hills.  The final matches were a time to have fun and celebrate the high school careers of these seniors, who mixed things up a little.  Spencer, playing first singles, fell to Jones 6-4, 6-1; LaFrance fell at second singles 6-3, 6-1; and Emme Thomas lost to Nymberg 6-0, 6-1.  Faler paired with Reinhart at first doubles, and won 6-0, 6-1 over Gauosy-Donses; Breuer-Neal fell to Glorses-Hassult at second doubles 6-1, 6-2.

SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS:  The postseason for the Eagles started at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament at Mason Tennis Complex on Oct. 6th; semi and finals were held Sat., Oct. 8th.

Amanda Reinhart advanced through the singles bracket, straight to the Sectional Tournament finals for a rematch with fellow ECC player Caitlin Fisher of Turpin.  The road to the finals began as Reinhart breezed through her first two rounds to advance to the semifinals.  Reinhart defeated Brooklyn Nielson of Wilmington 6-0, 6-0, and then collected the 6-1, 6-0 win over Walnut Hills’ Jalyn Hall.

Claire LaFrance/Emme Thomas won their first match over Mackenzie Clark/Taylor Hogsed of Amelia, winning 6-1, 6-4.  The win earned them a meeting with Loveland’s Anna Svitkovich/Andrea Wittekind, but the Milford duo couldn’t advance, falling 6-1, 6-0.  Mallory Faler opened tournament play by facing Haley Guerin of Kings.  Though a competitive match, Faler lost to Guerin, 6-3, 6-4.  Nicole Spencer faced one of the ECC’s better singles players, Peyton Beller of Loveland.  Beller advanced by defeating Spencer, 6-0, 6-0.  Leah Breuer/Emma Neal met with #2 seeds Harsitha Kalaiarasan/Beverly Liu from Sycamore.  The pair from Sycamore won 6-0, 6-0, and eventually placed fourth in the tournament.

Saturday’s final day of competition began with Reinhart playing Amanda Wilson of Sycamore, which resulted in another 6-0, 6-0 sweep.  The semifinal proved a bit more challenging, where Reinhart met with #3 seed Ananya Aggarwal of Mason.  Reinhart won the first set 6-2, but Aggarwal fought back for a win in the second, 6-2.  Reinhart took the win though, and the 6-1 victory moved her to the finals.

The final round, in what may now be described as a rivalry, had Milford’s Reinhart and Turpin’s Fisher facing off for the third time this season.  In their first meeting, Reinhart prevailed over Fisher 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2 for the regular season conference win; Fisher defeated Reinhart in their second meeting for the singles championship at the ECC Conference Tournament.  While Fisher took the first set 6-4, Reinhart rallied to even with a 4-6 win in the second.  In the third and final, Fisher took set 7-5 and Reinhart finished as the Sectional Runner-Up, and advancing to next week’s OHSAA District Tournament.

POLL WATCH:  The final poll was released on Oct. 3.   Just one change occurred in the final poll of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll and it involved Turpin of the ECC.  The top four remain unchanged; Mason, Sycamore, Ursuline, and Mt. Notre Dame.  Turpin, previously ranked sixth for a few weeks, improved to fifth over St. Ursula.  Loveland maintained their eighth place ranking, and Walnut Hills fell from ninth to a tie with Princeton for tenth.  Coming off a fifth place finish at the ECC tournament and Reinhart’s second place finish in first singles, Milford moved back into the poll with three votes.
