Season Underway For Boys Tennis

SETTING THE SCENE:  Head Coach Kelcey Davison returns for her second year at the helm of the Milford varsity boys tennis program.  The 2016 team finished fifth in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, an improvement over sixth place in 2015 team. 

 

TEAM PREVIEW:  Five of the seven routine starters from 2016 return this year.  Still relatively young, the team will rely on the experience of returning juniors Ben Mason, J. Kendall Morehouse, Reed Spencer, and Holden Owens, as well as seniors Jack Eppers and Jared Gibson.  Mark Ostrander joins the team as a freshman.

 

A LOOK BACK:  The Eagles were active over spring break, opening the season with a few nonconference opponents.

Milford kicked off the year with a win, 4-1 at Elder on Mon. 3/27.  Playing first singles, Holden Owens defeated Rosen 6-1, 6-1, while Ben Mason won 6-0, 6-1 over Elder’s Cole.  J.Kendall Morehouse won at third singles to complete the sweep, a 6-1, 6-0 victory of Accurso.  Jack Eppers/Mark Ostrander came from behind to defeat Timmers/Meade in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, and the duo of Reed Spencer/Jared Gibson lost 4-6, 2-6 to Elder’s Reinins/Hurley at first doubles.

Owens held on to win again when the Eagles faced St. Xavier B on 3/28.  Owens took the first set 6-0, and though Corcoran of St. Xavier mounted a 4-6 comeback Owens took the third 6-4 for the Eagles only win.  At second singles, Mason fell in three to Motley, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.  Gibson, at third singles, feel as well, a 2-6, 2-6 loss to St. Xavier’s Meuthing.  The Eagles put up a fight, as the pairing of Ostrander/Morehouse fell to Bismeyer/Hendy 7-6, 0-6, 0-6, while Spencer/Mrigank Sharma lost 2-6, 6-7 to Voss/Williams.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  The Eagles will be busy this week, including dates with ECC foes #4 Turpin and #6 Walnut Hills. Milford’s home opener is scheduled for Wed., 4/5 with LaSalle.

POLL WATCH:  As in 2016, Mason opens the season ranked at the top of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ preseason poll. Sycamore and St. Xavier follow, with the ECC’s Turpin in fourth and Lakota East rounding out the top five.  The ECC is well represented in the first poll of the year, with Walnut Hills (6th), Kings (7th), and Loveland (9th) all debuting in the top ten.  Anderson sits outside the poll with 13 votes, while Milford did not received any votes in the preseason poll.
