SENIOR NIGHT, SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT NEXT FOR BOYS TENNIS

SETTING THE SCENE:  The Milford boys tennis team will celebrate Jack Eppers and Jared Gibson this week, as the two seniors play for the final time on their home court.  Last week Milford placed third at the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championships, the highest team finish in conference play since the 2009-2010 season when the team place third in the FAVC Buckeye Conference.

 

A LOOK BACK:  Milford opened the week with a 4-1 loss at Mariemont, ranked #6 in the Division II area coaches’ poll.  Stephens of Mariemont defeated Ben Mason 6-4, 6-1 at first singles, while Reed Spencer fell to Andrews 6-4, 6-4 at second singles.  Jack Eppers, playing third singles, lost a tough three-set match to Mariemont’s Cook 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Moving to first doubles, Mark Ostrander and J Kendall Morehouse scored the win for Milford, 6-2, 6-4 over McGlory-Northrup, and Peterman-Brandser of Mariemont defeated Mrigank Sharma and Jared Gibson 6-3, 6-3 at second doubles. 

The doubles team of J Kendall Morehouse and Mark Ostrander won an Eastern Cincinnati Conference championship, the first for Milford tennis since the inception of the league in 2013.  The team placed third overall, the highest finish for the Eagles since 2010.  Ben Mason reached the finals at second singles and finished in second place.  Both Holden Owens (first singles) and Reed Spencer (third singles) finished in third place, while Jack Eppers and Jared Gibson placed sixth at first doubles.

Team scores: 1. Turpin 35, 2. Walnut Hills 33, 3. Milford 31, 4. Anderson 25, 5. Kings 23, 5. Loveland 23, 7. Glen Este 8. 

GCTCA – The weather continued to challenge organizers of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association.  Full results will be available once all flight competition has been completed; check back for updates and results.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  Milford opens the week ahead at home with Summit Country Day, when the team and fans will celebrate seniors Jack Eppers and Jared Gibson.  Following a nonconference match with #10 Fairfield, the Eagles move into the postseason at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament.  All tournament play will be held at the Mason Tennis Complex at Mason Middle School.  See below for more information.

SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT:  As of 5/6, the Eagles expect the following in the first round of the tournament:

  • Holden Owens vs. Josh Schwarber (Princeton)
  • Ben Mason vs. Joe Cunningham (Princeton)
  • Reed Spencer vs. Aaron Barge (Harrison)
  • Jack Eppers/Jared Gibson vs. Wyatt Baker/Keegan Warren (Hamilton)
  • J Kendall Morehouse/Mark Ostrander vs. Sam Greenberg/Liam Smith (Loveland)

INSIDE THE ECC: Milford stands at 7-6 overall, and end the year at 3-3 in the final ECC standings.  Turpin leads the league at 6-0, followed by both Loveland and Walnut Hills at 4-2.  Anderson fell to 3-3, tied with Milford.  Kings will end the year 1-5 in ECC play, followed by Glen Este at 0-6.

Holden Owens improved to 10-4 overall, 3-3 in the ECC at first singles, while teammate Ben Mason is 3-3 in ECC and 9-4 overall at second singles.  Playing third singles, Reed Spencer is now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in ECC play.   First doubles duo Jack Eppers/Jared Gibson now stand at 5-8 overall and 1-5, while the undefeated pairing of J Kendall Morehouse/Mark Ostrander is now 7-0 overall and unbeaten in the ECC at 3-0.   

 

POLL WATCH: Mason, Sycamore, St. Xavier, the ECC’s Turpin and Moeller ended the year in the top five of the final Cincinnati Enquirer's area coaches’ poll.  Lakota East and Loveland finished the season tied for sixth, followed by Walnut Hills, Anderson and Fairfield.  Though Milford fell out of the top ten, the team was the only other ECC program to receive votes (6) in the final poll.
