Six Milford High School Football Players Announce College Plans
The Milford High School Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that six members of its Class of 2017, and participants on the 2016 Football Team, will continue their athletic careers on the collegiate level. The student-athletes that have committed to continuing their academic and athletic futures include: Andrew Johnson (University of Sioux Falls), Eric Richey (Ohio Dominican University), Dawson Slone (Cincinnati Christian University), Hayden Sluder (Siena Heights University), Daniel Wilson (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) and Chase Witte (Case Western Reserve University).
Johnson was the Eagles’ most decorated award winner, earning a bevy of honors for his play along the offensive line. A first team All-Eastern Cincinnati Conference selection, Johnson also earned second team all-city and second team all-district selections from the Ohio Football Coaches’ Association and Associated Press, respectively. From his left tackle position, Johnson anchored the offensive line for an Eagles’ team that ranked second in ECC with 235.3 rushing yards per game.
At Sioux Falls, an NCAA Division II school in South Dakota, Johnson will play for new head coach Jon Anderson who took over the Cougars program in December. Andrew is the son of Jeff and Sarah Johnson and Rebecca Burgess.
Richey earned honorable mention All-ECC honors last fall after shifting from linebacker to defensive end early in the season. He ended up third on the Eagles’ roster with 63 total tackles, including six for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
At Ohio Domincan, Richey will play for head coach Kelly Cummings who led the Panthers to a 7-4 record in 2016 in his first season at ODU. Eric is the son of Michael and Bobbi Richey.
Slone was an integral piece of the second-ranked rushing offense in the ECC during the 2016 season. A second-team all-conference choice, Slone ranked third in the ECC with 822 yards on the ground. The diminutive, but powerful senior scored six touchdowns and had three 100-yard rushing games, including a high of 168 against Norwood.
At Cincinnati Christian, a school sponsoring a football team for just the second year, Slone will play for former Cincinnati Bengal David Fulcher. Dawson is the son of Delbert Slone and Jamie Raymer.
Sluder earned All-ECC first team honors from his linebacker position, finishing with a team-leading 88 tackles, including 5.5 for loss. He tallied one sack, while picking up three forced fumbles. Sluder tallied at least five tackles in all 10 games, including three with 10+. His single-game high came against Loveland when he finished with 13.
At Siena Heights, an NAIA school located in Adrian, MI, Sluder will play for head coach Matt Kohn who led the Saints to a 5-5 record in his first year at the school last fall. Hayden is the son of Jamie and Barbara Sluder.
Wilson was a regular on the defensive line for the Eagles in 2016, finishing his senior campaign with 32 tackles. He also forced one fumble and batted down a pass.
At Rose-Hulman, Wilson will play for Jeff Sokol, who just completed his sixth season leading the Engineers, a campaign that ended with an NCAA Division III playoff appearance. Daniel is the son of Tracey Sparks.
Witte had a remarkable senior season, capped with earning first team All-ECC and second team All-Southwest District accolades. Witte was easily the most versatile and valuable Eagle this season, taking snaps at a whopping 10 different positions between offense, defense and special teams. He finished his senior season as the ECC’s No. 1 rusher with 1,099 yards, while accounting for 17 total touchdowns. Slated to start the campaign at safety and as a return man, Witte spent the majority of the year at quarterback for Milford, while also spending time at running back, receiver and at multiple special teams positions.
At Case Western, Witte will play for highly successful head coach Greg Debeljak, who has led the Spartans to nearly 100 wins since taking the reigns of the program in 2004. Chase is the son of Scott and Beth Witte.
These six commitments bring the total number for the MHS Class of 2017 to 12. Further signee information will be shared throughout the 2016-17 academic year as it is finalized.
