2020 Spring Team Previews: Boys & Girls Track & Field

Posted on: April 24, 2020

Prior to the COVID-19 shutdown, we asked each of our spring head coaches to take a few minutes to preview the seasons, while also sharing how they’ve stayed engaged with their teams. In the seventh installment of a seven-part series, track & field head coach Shane Bartholomew shares his thoughts.

Coach Bartholomew’s thoughts
“On the boys side this season is going to be one of a lot of firsts; meaning we’re going to have a lot of athletes competing in their first varsity meets. We lost an awful lot from last year’s group that will need to be replaced. We’ll need to see who steps up and takes those open spots! Our team goal was to get back near the middle of the pack in the ECC this year. After a finish in the lower half of the league last year it’s time to start climbing back up!

“On the girls side of things we also lost a lot. A couple of younger kids that were placers from last year’s team decided to leave us for different reasons, but our biggest loss will be the 30+ points a meet we lost when Andrea Armstrong (two-time state qualifier/school record holder) graduated. All in all we have to find a way to make up for more than half of our team’s points from last year. The good news is that we are a very young, but talented group. We have many ladies that have varsity experience and are ready to make the jump up to be our leaders. Though we lost many points, we only lost them from a handful of girls. We’re poised to make a jump back into the top-four (our team goal) of the league if all the girls can peak at the right time!

Coach Bartholomew Q&A
How are you staying in touch with your players during this time?
“Over this No-Contact period we have provided our groups with a handful of optional workouts that they can choose from each week. We’re communicating back and forth through emails and social media.

Share something fun you've done/have planned with your players virtually.
“One thing that we did was something our Distance Coach, Coach Ackerman set up; he created a couple of “virtual races.” One day you were to run a mile and either using a running app called Strava or your own GPS device, track your distance and time then send in a photo of it. Then another day was a two mile run. Coach Ack has been tracking and sharing the results on our social media pages. We even invited our coaching staff, teaching staff and friends of the program to join in. It was a good opportunity for some of these kids to go out and get some exercise with a little motivation!

“Another idea I’m trying to finalize is a fun idea to go along with the team pentathlon we finished up right before this break began. I want to do some type of virtual pentathlon where the kids do the events on their own and send in videos or pictures with their results. Just trying to find some more fun ways to get them out and moving, but also staying connected. We’ll see how that one goes! Stay tuned!!!”
