Baseball Hosts Another ECC Rival, West Clermont, In Next Tournament Game

SETTING THE SCENE: A battle of two Eastern Cincinnati Conference heavyweights is on tap for the OHSAA Tournament match-up for the Milford High School baseball team as the Eagles welcome West Clermont on Thursday at 5 p.m. Milford advanced to the game after a 7-0 win over league foe on Tuesday. The Eagles, 19-7 on the year, shared the 2018 league crown, but one of the squad’s three league losses came to the Wolves on a walk-off home run. Milford won the other match-up with WC. GAME REWIND

Calvin Hunter and Jared Dettmer combined on a one-hit shutout as Milford rolled past conference foe Withrow by a 7-0 score in opening round OHSAA Tournament action. Hunter allowed just two walks, while striking out seven in his five innings of work, before turning the final two frames over to Dettmer who was just as unhittable. The steady Eagles O scored single runs in the first and third, along with two in the second and three in the fifth to secure the win.

INSIDE THE ECC: A wild final week of the regular season saw Milford and Loveland share the 2018 ECC Championship. Needing a pair of wins over West Clermont for a piece of the title, Loveland did just that, while Milford knocked off Withrow twice to secure the title.

POLL WATCH: Milford took the No. 7 position in the final Cincinnati Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll. Mason was crowned the regular season poll champions, earning all 18 first place votes. The balance of the top-five was comprised of Lakota East, Moeller, Elder and Badin. COLLEGE BOUND EAGLES: Four seniors on the 2018 Eagles’ roster have already announced their intention to continue their athletic and academic careers on the collegiate level. Twin brothers Alex and Dan Lutz are headed to Thiel College, while Mitch Mierke will take his talents to Thomas More College and Dylan Stewart has committed to Fort Wayne University.
