Board of Education Approves Stadium Light Replacement
Friday night football games will be a little bit brighter in the fall after the Milford Board of Education approved a contract on April 21 to replace lights at Eagle Stadium Powered by Cullen Electric.
This summer, Musco Sport Lighting will remove lights from the four existing wooden light poles and replace them on 80-foot galvanized steel poles on pre-cast concrete bases.
The current stadium lights are 35 years old, and finding parts to replace the lights when they go out has become increasingly difficult, said Jeff Johnson, director of business and operations.
“During the fall sports season, fans might have noticed a few lights out,” he said. “It was getting harder to find parts and we were concerned that we might not be able to safely hold games because we couldn’t properly light the field.”
The replacement lights will be LED fixtures, leading to a significantly lower cost to operate, Johnson said. Also included in the work is cutting three of the existing poles down to 25 feet, and bringing the existing speaker system down to that height. A fourth existing pole will be removed.
Light replacement is part of the long-range plan for the stadium, Johnson said. The new steel poles will be located to allow for future expansion of the bleachers. The lights and controls come with a 25-year warranty. The Board approved the contract at a base cost of $451,655.
The lights also came with a "showlight" entertainment option for an additional $6,000. This option was purchased but with private funds. Donations were given by the Milford Band Boosters, Stix Up Lacrosse Boosters, Milford Youth Lacrosse, and the Milford Athletic Boosters.
