Boys Bowling Season To Open with McNicholas

Posted on: November 19, 2018

TEAM PREVIEW:  The MHS boys bowling team opens the season in the coming week, and will look to build on a successful season from 2017-2018 that ended with a 15-4 overall record.

New Head Coach James Ficklin takes over as head coach for boys and girls bowling from Frank Ritzmann, who had been at the helm of the MHS bowling teams since the inception of the program in 2004.   An avid bowler for over 50 years, Ficklin comes to Milford after spending the last twelve seasons as the head coach at Walnut Hills High School, and will be joined by new assistant coach Butch Taylor.

The Eagles will be without Nathan McGeorge and Josh Cooper, both of whom graduated last year after four years on the varsity boys team. McGeorge was named the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Player of the Year for 2018, and was a first team selection his entire high school career. His 516 series set a new school record, breaking the previous record of 502 set by teammate Cooper earlier in the season.  Cooper achieved the first ever perfect score of 300 in the history of Milford bowling.

However, senior Nathan Hawkins and junior Nick Murphy return, and both should make an impression in the ECC.  Hawkins and Murphy were members of a team that ended the 2017-2018 regular season with an impressive 15-4 overall record.  Last year’s squad finished 9-3 in conference play, good for second place in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference and an improvement from their third-place finish in 2017.

Hawkins was named first team All-ECC, as he ended the year fifth for series high (498), seventh for high game (263), and eighth for overall average (197.6) in the conference standings.  He also recorded a three-game series of 637 at the SWOC/ECC Tournament, and contributed in two games in the OHSAA Sectional Tournament.

2017-2018 was the first season on the MHS bowling team for Murphy, and he saw a good amount of time in varsity play for the Eagles.  In just twenty-seven games for the Eagles, his high game of 235 ranked twenty-fifth in the conference standings.  He received honorable mention recognition for his contributions last season.

Eagles on the roster:  Joining Hawkins and Murphy on the varsity roster are senior Michael Kozakiewcz, juniors Kyle Fanning and Nate Feist, and sophomore Franklin Abt and A. J. Kaylor.

A LOOK AHEAD:  The Eagles open the season with McNicholas prior to the Thanksgiving break.  The match will be held at Cherry Grove Lanes, the home lanes of both the Eagles and the Rockets.  The action is slated for a 3:45 pm start.

POLL WATCH: The Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ preseason poll has been released, and Northwest will open at the top.  Elder, LaSalle, Fairfield and Ross round out the top five, and are followed by the ECC’s West Clermont and Oak Hills tied for sixth, with Colerain, Harrison and Mason in a three-way tie for eighth.  Milford (12) sits just outside the top ten, and is joined by ECC programs Kings (6), Loveland (3) and Walnut Hills (1) in receiving votes in the preseason poll, which can be found at http://preps.cincinnati.com/coachespolls.
