Boys Golf Turns Attention To First Duals Of 2017 Campaign

SETTING THE SCENE: Following appearances in a trio of tournaments to open the season last week, the Milford High School boys golf team will now kick off dual match play with a pair of head-to-head match-ups in the coming days. The Eagles were led in all three tournaments last week by junior Justin Horn and will look to improve in one-on-one contests against Turpin (Tuesday) and McNicholas (Thursday).

 

THE UPCOMING DOCKET: A look at Milford’s schedule for the upcoming week:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Turpin, Ivy Hills CC, 3:30 p.m.

A LOOK BACK: Aug. 5 at Sycamore Invitational: A full field of 18 teams greeted the Eagles at their season-opener, the Sycamore Invitational, held on Aug. 5 at the Blue Ash Golf Course. The day didn’t go quite as planned for the Eagles as they carded a team score of 357 and finished 16th overall. Junior Justin Horn paced Milford with a round of 82, followed by Cameron Loux’s score of 86. Elder took the team crown, finishing 12 shots ahead of Centerville.

 

Aug. 8 at Anderson Invitational: Milford’s second outing of the year provided a marked improvement as the Eagles shaved 17 strokes off their previous total to finish tied for 11th with a team score of 340 at the Anderson Invitational on Aug. 8. Mason won the team crown by nine strokes over St. Xavier, with the Eagles sharing 11th with Moeller. Junior Justin Horn was again Milford’s low scorer of the day, carding a 74. The event was played at the Legendary Run Golf Course.

 

Aug. 9 at ECC Preseason Tournament: The Eagles got their first taste of Eastern Cincinnati Conference play this fall at the league’s preseason tournament on Aug. 9 at Sharon Woods Golf Course. Looking to build on last season’s league crown, the Eagles finished fifth with a team score of 356. Turpin took the top spot, finishing six shots in front of Loveland. On the individual leaderboard, junior Justin Horn again paced the Eagles, finishing tied for fifth with a score of 79.

 

POLL WATCH: The latest area Division I coaches’ poll, released weekly and sponsored by the Cincinnati Enquirer shows Milford tied for ninth according to the five voting coaches. St. Xavier grabbed four of the five top nods to take first place, with GCL rival Elder earning the fifth No. 1 vote and coming in second. Mason, Lakota East and Moeller round out the top-five. The ECC is well represented with Loveland (6th), Anderson (7th) and Turpin (T-9th), with Kings and West Clermont also earning votes.
