Boys Hoops Hosts Sycamore In Mercy Health Tipoff Classic To Open Season

Posted on: December 1, 2016

SETTING THE SCENE: Chasing an 11th straight winning season, the Milford High School basketball team will tip-off the new campaign when they host Sycamore in the first game of the third annual Mercy Health Tipoff Classic on Friday night (December 2). A plethora of new faces dot the Eagles roster under head coach Joe Cambron who enters his 15th season on the sidelines. Milford will be looking to avenge a season-opening loss to the Aviators last season in what was the seventh straight season-opening match-up between the squads.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Milford is coming off a strong 14-9 season, but had a near roster turnover after last season’s senior-laden roster all graduated. The top two returnees for Coach Cambron and company are seniors Wes Reid and Matt Kirk, who both played extensively in their first full varsity campaigns last year. Junior Nathan Gallimore joined the regular rotation late in the year after starting the year on the junior varsity squad and made an immediate impact. Senior Jacob Riesenberg is also returning after seeing some varsity action last year. One of the most interesting components of this year’s roster is the return of three seniors who did not play last season. Both Diomante Johnson and Aaron Salva are back after a one-year hiatus, while fellow senior Jack Hannah returns after not competing since his freshman year. The roster is rounded out by several players up from last year’s highly-successful JV squad including juniors Blake King, Kyle Minton and Hunter Pollitt and sophomores Jake Ayler, Caleb Farrell and Brady Sluder.

The Knights should be in the title conversation again this year. The schedule of ECC conference games this week includes: Saturday-Withrow at Walnut Hills.

POLL WATCH: The Eagles are one of several teams receiving votes in the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll. Moeller is the preseason favorite among the 13 voting coaches, earning seven of the No. 1 votes cast. Oak Hills (three votes), Mason (two votes), LaSalle and the ECC’s Walnut Hills round out the top-five. Seventh place Princeton received the final No. 1 vote. The ECC is also represented by Kings (tied for eighth) and Withrow (10th). The coaches’ poll is released every Monday at Noon at preps.cincinnati.com/coachespolls.
