Boys Tennis At Centerville This Week

SETTING THE SCENE:   Following a busy week and changes due to weather, Milford’s boys tennis team will have a light schedule before facing four straight conference rivals.  The team, who stand at 3-3 overall, will travel to Centerville High School for a nonconference date this week.  

 

A LOOK BACK:  Following schedule changes, the first match of the week was also the first conference match of the season, Tuesday’s date with #4 Turpin.  The Trojans, one of the favorites to claim the ECC this season, defeated the Eagles 5-0.  Holden Owens, at first singles dropped his first match of the season, falling to Wendel 0-6, 0-6.  Ben Mason lost to Caruso 1-6, 2-6 at second singles, as did J.Kendall Morehouse at third singles, 0-6, 1-6 to Muscatello.  First single duo Jared Gibson/Jack Eppers were taken down by Borger/Wantz 2-6, 2-6, and Reed Spencer/Mark Ostrander lost to Reynolds/Kovach 4-6, 4-6. 

Wednesday’s match with LaSalle was played as scheduled with a better outcome for the Eagles, as Milford defeated LaSalle 5-0.  Owens won over Orth 6-1, 6-1; Mason defeated Towns 6-1, 6-1; and Morehouse defeated Gulasy 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.  Gibson/Eppers won at first singles 6-1, 6-0, and the pairing of Ostrander/Mrigank Sharma at second singles swept Roell/Kelhoffer, 6-0, 6-0.

The momentum for Milford continued on Friday, as they swept Madeira 5-0 in a match delayed from Monday due to weather.  Owens dispatched Palmer fairly easily at first singles, 6-2, 6-1.  At second singles, Mason won 6-3, 6-4 over Bass, and Morehouse defeated Baldain 6-4, 6-4 at third singles.  Gibson/Eppers easily defeated Aaron/Kane 6-0, 6-1, and it took three sets for Spencer/Ostrander to win at second doubles, taking down Reed/Zeigler 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Thursday’s match with #6 Walnut Hills was rescheduled due to weather as well, and played on Sunday.  The Eagles of Walnut Hills defeated the Milford Eagles, 4-1.  Owens posted Milford’s lone victory, a 6-4, 6-1 win over Walnut’s Vaz at first singles. Mason lost at second singles to Manchineela 2-6, 4-6, and Morehouse fell to Pharris 1-6, 4-6 at third singles.  Gibson/Eppers, playing first singles lost 1-6, 0-6, while the second singles duo of Spencer/Ostrander were defeated 6-7 (3-7) 3-6.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  The MHS boys tennis squad has a break this week, with just one match on the schedule.  The Eagles will head to Centerville for a nonconference match on Wed., 4/12.

INSIDE THE ECC:  Milford is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play after playing #4 Turpin and #6 Walnut Hills, the current Eastern Cincinnati Conference leader.  Anderson and Turpin are tied at 1-0, while Loveland sits at 1-1.  Glen Este and Kings are both 1-0 to start the season. 

 

POLL WATCH:  Week two of the Enquirer’s area coaches’ poll finds top ranked Mason now followed by Sycamore, while St. Xavier fell from second to third.  A trio of ECC schools – Turpin, Anderson and Walnut Hills, are now fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.  Kings and Loveland are ranked ninth and tenth.  Milford, previously ranked, fell out of the top ten but did receive seven votes this week.  Find the Cincinnati Enquirer coaches' poll HERE.
