Boys Track And Field Opens At Coaches’ Classic

Posted on: April 2, 2017

SETTING THE SCENE:  In his third year as Head Coach, Shane Bartholomew looks for a combination of experience and youth to make an impact on the Milford boys track team.   The 2016 Eagles finished seventh at the Eastern Cincinnati Conference meet, and Bartholomew is optimistic that the returning members will lead the way for those just starting varsity competition.

PREVIEWING THE EAGLES:

Keep an eye on junior Dustin Reynolds, as he returns to challenge the school record in the 400 meter dash.  Reynolds is expected to make an impact in the 4x400 meter relay as well as the high jump.  He’ll be joined by classmate Dillon Coleman in sprints and mid-distance events, and Ben Gerding in mid-distance events as well. Sprinter Dawson Slone returns for his senior season for both individual and relay events.

Bartholomew will look for distance runner Harris Craycraft to lead the distance runners in 2017.  The junior finished in the top ten of the ECC in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Manny Fernandez, who last season qualified for Regionals following a fourth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, returns for 110 and 300 hurdles as well as the long jump.

PRESEASON TEST:  The MHS boys team participated in the Kings Relays meet on Sat., March 25, where the team finished sixth.  Results include: 3rd in 4 x 200 relay and 4 x 400 relay; 4th in 4 x 100 relay, 4 x 800 relay, and high jump; 5th in 4 x 1600 relay, 800 sprint relay, and discus; 6th in distance relay and shot put; and 7th in long jump.

A LOOK AHEAD:  Milford returns from spring break and heads to the Coaches’ Classic, one of the more popular and difficult competitions.  Preliminaries will take place on Wed., April 5 at Ross High School.   Those who qualify will compete at the finals, held at ROSS (updated), on Fri., April 7.  Both events are scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm.

POLL WATCH:  Mason leads the rankings of the Division I coaches’ preseason poll, sponsored by the Cincinnati Enquirer.  Behind Mason are Sycamore, St. Xavier, and LaSalle.  Withrow, Kings and Loveland, all of the ECC, rank fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.   Walnut Hills (6) and Turpin (1) received votes, while the Milford boys team is not ranked in the preseason poll.
