District Wrestling Tournament Ahead for Bronaugh and Ward

Two Eagles placed in the top four at Sectionals and will compete at the OHSAA District Tournament this weekend.

Junior Kobey Bronaugh (3rd) and sophomore Max Ward (4th) have advanced to Districts, while sophomore Mason Roy, who placed fifth, will serve as an alternate.

Bronaugh finished in third place at #126.  With a bye in the first round, the #3 seed moved on with a pin (1:44) over Moeller’s Tristan McKenzie, but lost a close match 4-2 with #2 seed Jack Collins of Elder.  A 12-4 major decision over #4 Christian Coldiron of Harrison moved Bronaugh into the final for third place, setting up a rematch with McKenzie who had worked his way through the consolation bracket as well.  Bronaugh was victorious, pinning McKenzie in 2:33 to claim take the podium in third place.

Ward (#120), a #3 seed as well, faced Matt McCowan of Lebanon following a first round bye.  After a 5-1 decision over McCowan, Ward lost to Harrison’s Cameron Baird, the #2 seed.  He then defeated James Krusinski of St. Xavier with a 7-3 decision to advance to the third place match where he finished in fourth place following a 6-5 loss to Brayden Zenni of Moeller. 

At #152, Mason Roy advanced through the consolation bracket to claim fifth place.  Roy defeated #5 seed Lucas Hankins of Moeller by pin in the final, in 2:38.

Other Eagles who took the podium include sophomore Ray Clayton (#132) and junior Jonah Fouts (#113), both of whom finished in sixth place.

Milford finished with 56 points, good for ninth place.  Elder claimed the team championship, followed by Western Brown, Harrison, Moeller and Lebanon.  Milford finished ahead of fellow ECC programs Kings (10th) and Turpin (t-11th).

2017 DISTRICT RESULTS:  Both Bronaugh and Ward advanced to last year’s 2017 District Tournament, and both advanced to the second day of competition before losing in consolation rounds.  Bronaugh lost a close 5-1 decision to Mason Kleinberg of Springboro, to finish the season with 33 wins.  Ward fell in his last match to David Hasty of Stebbins, 11-2, and finished the season with 13 wins.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  Bronaugh and Ward will compete at the OHSAA Division I District Wrestling Championship, to be held Friday, March 3 and Sat., March 4 at Kettering Fairmont High School.

Ward will open the meet facing Mason Kleinberg of Springboro, while Bronaugh is scheduled to face LaSalle’s Casey Wiles.
