Eagles Come Up Short On Senior Night Against Winton Woods

Posted on: October 9, 2022

Despite a valiant effort, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, Milford came up just short against one of Ohio’s top teams, falling to Winton Woods 28-14 during Week 8 of the OHSAA Football season. The Eagles yielded just 24 rushing yards and forced five Warriors turnovers but couldn’t pull off the upset.

A turnover plagued first half ended in a 7-7 tie when Jacob Smith blocked a Warriors’ field goal in the waning seconds. But Winton Woods made the necessary adjustments in the second half to pull to a 28-7 lead before a late Milford touchdown. The Eagles stymied standout running back Trey Cornist who entered the night with nearly 1,100 yards, holding him to just 17 yards on 10 carries.

A scoreless first quarter saw WW finally break through near the six-minute mark of the second quarter on an interception return for a touchdown. Austin Hardin found Reece Davis from 36 yards out three minutes later for the first Milford score of the night.

Winton Woods’ secondary made another big play in the third quarter, snagging its second interception return for a touchdown. Vance George connected with Tra’mar Harris for two second half touchdowns to help build the Warrior cushion to a point Milford couldn’t overcome. Natwan Webster burst in from two yards out with 1:24 to play for the final score of the night.

Milford held a comfortable 328-231 edge in total offense but were hurt by four turnovers, including the two INT returns for touchdowns. Webster finished with 85 yards on the ground, while Hardin connected on 22 of 40 throws for 214 yards. Smith had an astounding stat line, finishing with nine tackles, including a sack, a forced fumble, an interception, the blocked field goal, along with 100 yards on kickoff returns.

The Eagles will take to the road for the first of two straight to close out the regular season, traveling to West Clermont next Friday night. The Wolves are coming off of a 35-21 upset of Anderson in Week 8.
