Eagles Grind Out ECC Win At West Clermont

Posted on: October 20, 2018

On a night when the weather got worse as the game wore on, Milford rode the able back and legs of senior RB Cameron Kells to a 23-21 win at soggy West Clermont on Friday night. The Wolves scored the last 14 points of the game to draw within two points, but a key defensive stand and some continued hard running by Kells allowed the Eagles to seal the triumph. Kells finished with 194 yards on the ground, while scoring all three of Milford’s TDs.

First Quarter

  • Kells capped the opening drive of the night for the Eagles in a familiar spot, standing in the end zone after bursting in from two yards out. The scoring play was set-up by a 30-yard strike from Hunter Johnson to Jake Ayler. A high snap on the PAT led to an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt.
  • After a series of punts back and forth, West Clermont broke through with 2:32 remaining when Jacob Kilgore got loose up the middle for 34 yards, taking a 7-6 lead in the process.
  • The Eagles had a nice drive moving on their next possession, but WC’s Tristan Petty snagged an interception inside the red zone to turn the Eagles away.

Second Quarter

  • Despite taking 6:04 off the clock with a 15-play, 60-yard drive, the Wolves couldn’t convert on a long drive. Hayden Johnson sacked West Clermont’s Hunter Eads for a loss of 16 that snuffed out the drive.
  • Milford took advantage, and a 14-7 lead on its next drive, again courtesy of Kells. Carrying the ball for all but six yards of a 73-yard scoring drive, the senior raced the final 21 yards for this second score. Ayler carried the ball in for the two-point conversion for Milford.

Third Quarter

  • The second half couldn’t have started any better for Milford as WC’s Ryan Cann fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, with CT Phillips recovering. Six plays later, it was Kells dancing in from 16 yards out for a 21-7 Milford lead.
  • The Eagles were in position to really take a comfortable lead on their next possession, only to fumble it away deep in WC territory. But the defense came to the rescue two plays later as senior DL Brian Stevens wrestled Eads to the ground in the end zone for a safety.
  • In the waning seconds of the quarter, the Wolves, who entered the week the last ranked team in the ECC in passing offense, went up top to claw back in. Eads found a wide open Trevor Grant from 23 yards out and Chayce Gambrell’s two-point run made it a 23-15 game with one quarter to play. The key play on the drive came when Trevor Click rushed for 21 yards on a fake punt.

Fourth Quarter

  • Following the TD, the Wolves successfully pulled off an onside kick, but facing fourth down, Jared Engelman stuffed Gambrell two yards short of a first down.
  • The Eagles couldn’t do anything on their next possession and West Clermont forced a punt. Then it was déjà vu as Eads again found Grant open, this time for a 49-yard catch and run. Needing another two-point conversion, Milford junior Max Ward stuffed Eads on his run attempt.
  • West Clermont then tried another onside kick, but this time was unsuccessfully. Needing to burn just over three minutes off the clock to win, Milford rode Kells across the finish line. The biggest play came on fourth and two and Kells delivered, grinding out four yards to pick up a huge first down. Three more carries for 11 yards by Kells brought any hopes of a West Clermont comeback to a halt.

Notable

  • Kells finished with his seventh 100-yard rushing performance of the year, as well as his sixth game with at least three touchdowns.
  • He also moved past the 1,300 yard mark for the year (1,319), the most by any Milford runner over the last 10 years.
  • Kells’ three TDs give him 28 for the year, setting a new mark for the most by an Eagle over the last decade.
  • Ward led the defense with 10 tackles, while Stevens added nine, including a sack. Hayden Johnson and Kells also recorded sacks.
