Eagles Win Instant Classic Over Anderson, Move to 4-0

Posted on: September 10, 2022

It took all but the final 26 seconds to determine the outcome of Friday night’s heavyweight battle between Milford and Anderson but when the smoke cleared, it was the Eagles moving to 4-0 for the first time since 1977 with a dramatic 48-47 win over the Raptors. The contest was back and forth all night and came down to an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt by Anderson in the waning seconds to decide it.

Just five seconds into the fourth quarter, the battle was knotted at 34 after Anderson scored to tie the game. An 81-yard catch and run by Luke Ray put Milord back in the lead but Griffin Scalf’s fifth TD pass of the night with under eight to go made it a 41-41 affair. Milford’s Austin Hardin matched Scalf with his fifth TD toss to Landen Wisbey at the 2:38 mark to push the Eagles back in front.

Things looked good when Jacob Smith intercepted Scalf for the second time on the ensuring possession deep in Milford territory. But the Raptors forced a punt with under a minute to play, taking over on the Milford 42. Five plays later, Brodey Berg punched it in from three yards out to draw within one. Anderson made the gutsy call to go for the win, but Scalf’s two-point conversion pass fell incomplete, handing the win to Milford. It was the Eagles first win over AHS since 2018.

The first half featured plenty of fireworks and ended at 27-27 after each QB threw three TD passes. Hardin found Cam Livingston, Reece Davis and Wisbey for scores, while Natwan Webster scored the first of his two rushing TDs late in the half. Webster added a second score early in the third.

Hardin’s electric play at QB continued as he finished 28 of 39 for 372 yards and 5 TDs. Webster churned out 133 yards on the ground, while Ray was the top pass catcher with 10 receptions for 169 yards. Smith complimented his two picks with six tackles, while Nick Scally and Robby Mickler led the way with 10 tackles each. Anderson’s Scalf finished 32 of 63 for 399 yards, but the Raptors could manage just 60 yards on the ground.

Milford’s road to 5-0 won’t be easy as the Eagles return home next Friday for an undefeated showdown against Kings.
