Experienced Boys Tennis Squad Opens Season At Home

Posted on: March 23, 2018

SETTING THE SCENE:  The 2018 Milford’s boys tennis team won’t lack leadership, as four seniors with varsity experience return for the upcoming season.

The team finished third in the 2017 final standings of the ECC, the best team finish since the inception of the conference in 2013 and the highest season ending position for a Milford boys team since 2010.  Head Coach Kelcey Davison returns for the third year to lead the varsity boys tennis program, assisted by Larrya Wall.

TEAM PREVIEW:  Seniors Ben Mason, Holden Owens, Mrigank Sharma and Reed Spencer will be joined by sophomores Stewart Dalziel, Michael Faler and Mark Ostrander on the varsity squad.

Owens returns at first singles for his senior season.  Despite an injury, he finished third at the 2017 ECC tournament and ended the season with a 12-5 overall record at first singles.  Owens was recognized by the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches’ Association in 2017, receiving the Most Improved Player Award, and was named second team All-Conference.

Fellow senior Mason returns at second singles as well.  Mason reached the finals of the ECC tournament at second singles and took the podium in second place, and finished third at the GCTCA Flight C tournament.  He finished the 2017 season at 11-5 overall at second singles, and 1-3 at first singles.  Mason was received all-conference honorable mention recognition.

Ostrander, who primarily competed in doubles last season, is projected to open the year playing third singles.   As a freshman, he and his partner won the first ever Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship for Milford, for their play in the ECC tournament at second doubles.

Senior Reed Spencer will start the season at first doubles with partner and classmate Mrigank Sharma.  In 2017, Spencer took third place in third singles at the ECC Championships. Sharma was an active player last season as well, and was involved in a number of pairings at both first and second doubles.

Senior Cameron Loux, and sophomores Stewart Dalziel and Michael Faler should see varsity action this season as well.
