First Week of Boys Tennis At Centerville, Home with Summit Country Day
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: The 2019 varsity tennis squad lost five members from the previous year to graduation, but three underclassmen return and will be counted on to use their experience to lead a young team. Back for a fourth year at the helm of the Eagles is Head Coach Kelcey Davison.
The Eagles struggled last season, ending the year 6-8 overall and just 1-5 in the ECC, one of the stronger conferences for boys tennis in the area. Though Milford finished 6th in the final standings and 6th at ECC Tournament, Milford’s tennis team won the Flight C Team Championship of the GCTCA Coaches Classic. Milford took first out of eight teams at the tournament.
Bringing experience to the varsity team are juniors Stewart Dalziel, Michael Faler and Mark Ostrander.
Ostrander returns for his third year playing at the varsity level. In 2018, he took first place at third singles in the GCTCA Coaches’ Classic, and fifth place at third singles in the ECC Championships. Ostrander made a successful run through the early rounds of the singles bracket at the OHSAA Division I Sectional Tournament before falling in the fourth round to the No. 1 seed and eventual sectional champion. As a freshman in 2017, he and his partner won the first ever Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship for Milford, for their play in the ECC Tournament at second doubles.
Faler and Dalziel each bring varsity experience, primarily in doubles play. Both saw action throughout the 2018 season, and Faler competed in doubles for the Eagles at the OHSAA Division I Sectional Tournament.
Joining the roster at the varsity level in 2019 are senior Kasey Shumard, juniors Clay Harris and Will Kroeger, sophomore Reiland Eubank, and freshman Wyatt Lindsey.
A LOOK AHEAD: The Eagles will open the season with two non-conference contests, first on the road at Centerville, and ending the week hosting Summit Country Day. The first conference match will take place the following week when the Eagles travel to face the Kings Knights of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.
