Posted on: February 23, 2021

Senior diver Sophie Cooper just committed to Ohio University to further her academic and athletic career. Sophie took upon diving after an incident in 2014 while she was competing in gymnastics’ that ultimately lead her to two broken and dislocated elbows. One season and four surgeries later in 2017, Sophie decide that it was time for a change and took on her new favorite sport, diving, which she has been competing in for five years now. In terms of short-term goals, Sophie had hoped to qualify for the upcoming state meet in Canton, Ohio. Despite an outstanding effort at Districts, she came up just short.

Sophie’s biggest achievement’s as a diver was when she placed third in the ECC championship meet in 2020 and excitingly enough she placed second in the ECC championship in 2021. She beat her personal best score in a 6-dive meet with a score around 225 and in an 11-dive meet with a score around 390.

Sophie’s greatest advice to incoming beginning divers is to “just have fun and don’t get frustrated if something isn’t going right. It never makes your attitude towards the certain situation any better.”
