February 13 vs. Turpin
Milford overcame an 11-points halftime deficit with a huge third quarter, then took eighth-seeded Turpin down to the wire before the Spartans pulled out a 63-59 win over the No. 18 Eagles in a thrilling OHSAA Tournament opener for both squads. With Milford with striking distance in the last 10 seconds, Turpin’s Rachel Reichard came up with a rebound on her own missed free throw, forcing an Eagle foul and the clinching pair of free throws.
Paige Ayler finished the game with a season-high 18 points including all nine of Milford’s first quarter tally. Milford trailed 34-23 at the break, but outscored the Spartans 22-11 in the third period, capped by an Olivia Thierauf lay-up as the seconds wound down, evening the score at 45 with the final eight minutes to go.
The early stretches of the fourth featured a trio of tie scores, before the Spartans used an 8-2 run to open a 64-50 cushion with under 1:30 to go. A missed front end of a one-and-one and a Spartan turnover allowed Milford to get within 60-59 after Madalyn Hills converted an old fashioned three-point play with just 40 ticks remaining on the clock. Turpin mishandled the ball again on its next possession, but Milford wouldn’t score again as Reichard made three of four free throws and recorded the clutch offensive rebound to end it.
Second chance points proved costly for the Eagles as the Spartans converted 16 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points, none bigger than Reichard’s final two.
Despite the defeat, the Eagles close 2020-21 with the program’s first winning season since 2015-16.
