Girls Bowling Season Begins This Week

SETTING THE SCENE:  Coach Frank Ritzmann returns to Milford for his thirteenth season to lead the MHS girls bowling team.   Four starters return from last year’s team that advanced to Districts, bringing experience and leadership into a season with high expectations.

 

TEAM PREVIEW:  The 2015-2016 Milford girls bowling team finished the season 15-3 overall and 12-2 in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference final standings.  The team finished in second place for the 2016 season, as they did in 2015 as well.  The team placed sixth in the OHSAA Sectional Bowling Tournament to earn a trip to the Districts, where they placed 19th.

In addition to setting a new high team average score of 2115, the team set new records for high game average (749) and baker game average (154) – all record highs since at least the 2004 season. 

Alyna Hook returns to the MHS bowling team for her senior season. Hook was named first team all-conference last year, an honor she received in 2015 as well.  The junior rolled a series of 531 at the District tournament, where she placed 53rd of the over 100 qualifiers who bowled all three games.  Hook ended the year in the top ten of the ECC conference leaders, including: high average (6th – 173); high game (7th - 233); and high series (5th - 429).

Fellow senior Lauren Shelton is back, following a season that ended with a 310 series at the District Tournament.  She received second team all-conference honors last season.  Following the end of the regular season, Shelton ranked 13th for high average (138); 12th for high game (208); and 16th for high series (346).

Junior Jessica Haines will return to the girls bowling team in 2016-2017.  Haines ended her sophomore season as a first team all-conference selection.  Haines placed 24th in the final standings at the OSHAA Division I District Bowling championship; bowling in all three games, she averaged a 194 and a high series of 583.  At the Eastern Cincinnati Conference/Southwest Ohio Conference Tournament, Haines set the new Milford girls record for a single game of 269, and a new record for a three game high series of 591, where she also earned first team all-tournament honors.  She ended the year with the seventh highest average in the ECC (172), tied for second for high game (269), and ninth for high series (392).

MacKenzie Mason, current junior, will be back for this season as well.  Mason’ was a second team all-conference selection following last season, as her game improved as the season progressed.  At the OSHAA District tournament she posted Milford’s high game of 202 and finished with a 353 series in two games.  Mason ended her season ranked 18th in high average (133) and tied for 22nd for high series (320) in the ECC.

Girls Roster:  Megan Cannon, Jessica Haines, Alyna Hook, Haley Johnson, MacKenzie Mason, Jessica Norman, and Lauren Shelton.

  

OPENNING SCHEDULE:  The Eagles will dive right into conference play, and open the season facing Anderson on Mon., 11/28.  The match is set for a 3:30 pm start and will be held at Cherry Grove Lanes.  Milford will then host Anderson at 3:30 pm on Wed., 11/30, at Eastgate Lanes. 

 

POLL WATCH:  * UPDATED * Milford enters week one of the season by entering the top ten of the Division I Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll.  The ECC’s Glen Este remained in first, with Seton second, and McAuley third.   Oak Hills remained in fourth, and Fairfield, previously ranked ninth, moved up to fifth.   Conference foe Anderson enters the poll in seventh.  Loveland (14), Turpin (8), Kings (5), and Walnut Hills (2) were among the other ECC teams to receive votes.   To view this week's coaches' poll, click HERE.
