Girls Lacrosse To Host Giveback Game March 28

Posted on: March 22, 2023

Annually, Milford Girls Lacrosse will designate one of their games as a give back game. The annual give back game is selected and organized by our seniors and gives focus and raises funds for a cause that is important to our team and Milford's community.

On Tuesday, March 28th at our game against Mount Notre Dame High School, Milford High School Girls' Lacrosse will be giving back to JDRF, raising awareness and funds for Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes honoring Senior player Rylee Johnson who has been playing lacrosse with the team and Type 1 Diabetes since the 7th grade.

Rylee’s Story: Hi, My name is Rylee Johnson I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 10. My symptoms were extreme thirst, frequent bathroom usage, weight loss, no appetite, and exhaustion. We caught it in the early stage but even with that I was extremely sick. My mom took me to my pediatrician and they checked my blood sugar on their meter and it read high, meaning my blood sugar was over 600 and the meter was not able to accurately read my blood sugar. We went straight to Cincinnati Children's hospital where they were able to see my blood sugar was at 886, which is extremely high, being that the normal blood sugar range is anywhere between 70-120. I was immediately admitted into the hospital and hooked up with IVs giving me insulin. My doctors were very surprised that I was not in worse shape and they were shocked that I was not in DKA. I stayed in the hospital for three days getting educated along with my parents on how to live with Type 1 Diabetes, which included multiple insulin shots and finger sticks a day and various number adjustments. After one year with diabetes, I was educated and trained on how to use an insulin pump, which gives you insulin automatically and a CGM, which is a constant glucose monitor.

There are many days where I have had to miss school or sit out of practices for my blood sugars being off, but everyone is very supportive. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my story!

We invite you to attend the game against the MND Cougars, on Tuesday, March 28th at 5:30 (JV) and 7:15 pm (Varsity). The team is asking all spectators to wear blue to show support for Rylee and JDRF.
