Girls Tennis To GCTCA Coaches Classic This Week

SETTING THE SCENE:  Last week the Lady Eagles celebrated their first conference win of the season amid a busy four day stretch of action.  Now, midway through the season, Milford’s girls tennis team will compete in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association’s Coaches Classic.  The Classic will help prepare the Lady Eagles for the Eastern Cincinnati Conference tournament the following week.

 

A LOOK BACK:   Milford faced the newly-formed West Clermont for the first time on Tues., Sept. 5 and came away with their first conference win of the season, 4-1.  Jackie Hooper won at second singles by defeating the Wolves’ Hansel, persevering in the first set for a 7-5, 6-3 final.

It took three sets for Leah Breuer, but she took the match at third singles over Robinson, 2-6 6-4 6-2. Emma Neal and Sydney Daniels, playing first doubles, dispatched Clark-Ipinmoroti 6-1, 7-6, while Olivia Bailey and Samantha Miller easily took the match 6-1, 6-2 at second doubles.  Emme Thomas fell to Stockton 2-6, 3-6 at first singles.

Milford hosted a nonconference match on Wed., Sept. 6 with Cincinnati Country Day.  The Eagles fell to CCD 5-0, who were ranked fourth in the Division II poll.  Thomas lost to Masterson at first singles 3-6, 0-6; Hooper fell to Chopra in second singles 1-6, 2-6; and Miller lost to Mangy 1-6, 4-6.  At first doubles, Neal-Daniels were defeated by Wright-Midha 1-6, 2-6, while the duo of Olivia Bailey and Olivia Ruhlman lost to Zalants-O’Brien 1-6, 3-6.

The Eagles headed to a meeting with the Kings Knights for a conference date on Thurs., Sept. 7, and Kings came away with the 5-0 win.  At first singles Thomas fell to Kings’ Guerin 1-6, 1-6; Hooper lost to Gostel 1-6, 0-6, and Breuer lost at third singles 0-6, 1-6 to Muenchen.  Neal-Daniels lost to Reich-Coughlin 0-6, 1-6 at first doubles, and at second doubles Miller-Bailey fell to Watiker/Ridenour despite a close second set, 1-6, 5-7. 

In the fourth match in as many days, Milford played host to ECC rival and #7 Loveland. Thomas was defeated 1-6, 0-6 by Svitkovich; Hooper lost to Dakoske 0-6, 0-6; and Breuer fell to Geers 0-6, 0-6. The duo of Neal-Daniels lost 3-6, 1-6 to Wittekind-Knecht, while Bailey-Miller fell to Hytree-Bartnik 1-6, 2-6.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  In the week ahead the Lady Eagles will head to the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association’s Coaches Classic.  Seed meetings have been held, and Milford is in Flight E of the tournament.

INSIDE THE ECC:  Turpin remains the top team in the ECC, 4-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall.  Loveland improved to 4-1 followed by Walnut Hills at 3-1.  Kings fell to 2-2, and Anderson fell to 2-3.  Milford improved to 1-3 after a win over West Clermont, who fell to 0-4.

 

POLL WATCH:  The area coaches’ poll for week five finds the top five unchanged; Mason held onto their top ranking followed by Ursuline Academy, St. Ursula, Sycamore and Turpin of the ECC. Loveland held at seventh, while Walnut Hills fell to tenth.  No other ECC teams, including Milford, received votes in week five of the poll.
