Girls Tennis Wins GCTCA Flight F; Look Forward To ECC Tournament

SETTING THE SCENE:  The Lady Eagles celebrated as they won the team championship for the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Tournament for Flight F, after a sweep over West Clermont for a conference win.  Now, as the regular season winds down, the Eagles take that excitement into a week that includes the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Tournament as well as a home date to celebrate seniors Lydia Krage, Sam Miller and Tori Puterbaugh.

                       

THE UPCOMING DOCKET:  If the weather cooperates, a big week awaits the Lady Eagles.  The team will begin on Mon., Sept. 24 celebrating seniors Lydia Krage, Sam Miller and Tori Puterbaugh prior to a nonconference contest with Centerville.  Midweek, Milford is scheduled at Wyoming High School, #5 in the Division II coaches’ poll.   The team will then compete in the ECC Tournament at Lunken Playfield, looking to improve from their fifth place finish in 2017.  

Monday, 9/24:             Centerville High School @ Milford, 4:30 pm, SENIOR DAY - postponed

Wednesday, 9/26:        Milford @ Wyoming High School, 4:30 pm

Friday, 9/18:               Milford @ ECC Tournament, Lunken Playfield Tennis Facility, 9:00 am

 

A LOOK BACK:

September 18 at West Clermont: Milford 5, West Clermont 0

Milford swept West Clermont, as the Eagles scored the first conference victory of the year. Elise Ostrander had not trouble at first singles, sweeping T. Hansel 6-0, 6-0.  At second singles, Emme Thomas won 6-1, 6-2 over Marsh, while Sam Miller defeated Glassburn at third singles, 6-2, 6-0.  Milford’s first doubles duo of Jackie Hooper-Ashley Stamper won 6-1, 6-4 over Kondle-J. Hansel, and Emma Neal-Olivia Bailey defeated Thalheimer-Cowles 6-4, 6-4 at second doubles.

 September 20 & 22 at GCTCA Tournament:  Milford wins Flight F

After all team members advanced to day two of competition, the Lady Eagles brought home the team championship for Flight F of the GCTCA Coaches’ Classic tournament.  Emme Thomas won at third singles, defeating Ross’ Sam Quick 6-3, 6-2.  Emma Neal and Sam Miller won the first doubles tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 finals victory over Hayley Harmon and Megan Fliter of Harrison.  Jackie Hooper finished second at second singles after falling in the finals 6-2, 6-2 to Isabella Saylor of Ross.  

Though the battle for first singles championship for Elise Ostrander and Marylynn Koons was initally postponed, Ostrander was the runner-up after falling to Koons 0-6 6-4 4-6. Olivia Bailey and Ashley Stamper, playing at second doubles in the backdraw final, fell to their opponents from Ross, 6-8. 

Milford won with a total of 275, followed by Ross (240) and Middletown (210). Flight F also included Monroe and Harrison. 

 

ICYMI:  Elise Ostrander was nominated as a Cincinnati Enquirer Athlete of the week for the week of Sept. 3.  The freshman singles player won both matches at first singles at Goshen and Anderson last week and led the Lady Eagles at the time with a 5-3 overall record at No. 1 singles.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Turpin, undefeated in ECC play, ends the year as the regular season champions of the ECC.  Loveland (5-1) ends the year second followed by Walnut Hills at 4-2. Anderson (3-3) is fourth, Kings is fifth at 2-4, and Milford (1-5) will finish sixth after a win over 0-6 West Clermont. 

  

POLL WATCH: There were no changes in the top three of the area coaches poll for week seven, as Mason, Ursuline Academy and the ECC’s Turpin held the top three positions.  Mt. Notre Dame rose from sixth to fourth, tied with Sycamore, and St. Ursula fell from fifth to sixth. Loveland remains in seventh and Walnut Hills moved to eighth from ninth. Anderson, who received no votes last week received ten in week seven, the only ECC school to receive votes. Find the most recent poll results HERE.
