Kings, West Clermont Among Full Schedule for Boys Tennis in Week Ahead

SETTING THE SCENE:  As the Eagles approach the middle of the season, they again have a busy schedule in the week ahead including the ECC’s West Clermont and Kings.  The Eagles defeated Moeller last week but fell to conference foes Anderson and Turpin. 

 

A LOOK BACK:  Milford traveled to #5 Lakota East on Mon., April 10 for a non-conference battle, and fell to the Thunderhawks, 0-5.  Holden Owens battled at first singles but feel to Lakota’s Holden 4-6, 3-6.  Also in singles, Ben Mason lost to Sacha 1-6, 0-6, while Ostrander was defeated 0-6, 3-6 to Cho.  At doubles, Reed Spencer and Mrigank Sharma lost to Hal/Cho 2-6, 3-6, and Stewart Dalziel and Michael Faler fell 1-6, 2-6 to Matthew/Ahloin 1-6, 2-6.

Despite some hard fought contests, #7 Anderson prevailed over Milford in an ECC battle on Tues., April 10 and the Eagles fell 0-5.  Owens lost to Sultan 2-6, 2-6, and Mason fell to Hugenberg 1-6, 3-6.  Ostrander lost to Scott 2-6, 6-7 (4-7).  Spencer/Sharma lost to Feagins/Zhou 2-6, 0-6 at first doubles, while Dalziel/Faler lost to Hensley/Lam 5-7, 4-6.

Milford played host to #7 Moeller on Wed., April 11, and sent the ranked Crusaders home with a loss.  Three matches went three sets and the Eagles prevailed 4-1.  All three Eagles won at singles: Owens defeated Schwartz 6-1, 6-3; Mason won out in three over Worthoff 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; and Ostrander defeated Gilhart 6-1, 0-6, 6-0.  Spencer and Cameron Loux came back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at first doubles over Smith/Schappacher, while Moeller’s Sampson/Henken defeated Milford’s Faler/Dalziel 2-6, 2-6.

Though the match did get underway last week with #4 Turpin, play was resumed on Fri., April 13, and the Spartans went home with the 4-1 conference win over the Eagles. Sharma/Faler won at second doubles with a 6-4, 6-2 score over Speelman/Egan.  Reynolds/Kissel of Turpin defeated Loux/Spencer 6-2, 6-3.  In singles play, Owens fell to Wendel 6-0, 6-0; Mason lost 6-1, 6-1 to Caruso; and Ostrander was defeated by Wantz 7-5, 6-1.

  

A LOOK AHEAD:  Another busy week ahead for the Eagles, including West Clermont and Kings of the ECC.  Milford will also host Springboro and Elder High Schools for non-conference play.

  • Wednesday, 4/18:        Elder High School @ Milford, 4:00 pm
  • Thursday, 4/19:           Kings High School @ Milford, 4:00 pm

  

INSIDE THE ECC:  About midway through the season, Milford stands at 2-5 overall, and 0-3 in ECC play.  Turpin leads the league at 4-0, followed by Anderson at 3-0.   Loveland and Walnut Hills are tied at 1-2, Milford is 0-3 and Kings and West Clermont are 0-1. 

Holden Owens is 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the ECC at first singles, while teammate Ben Mason is 1-2 in ECC and 3-4 overall at second singles.  Playing third singles, Mark Ostrander is now 2-4 overall and in the ECC, 0-3.   First doubles duo Reed Spencer and Cameron Loux sit at 1-3 overall and 0-2 In ECC play, while the pairing of Michael Faler and Mrigank Sharma is 2-1 overall and even at 1-1 in the ECC.  

 

POLL WATCH: Milford’s boys tennis team held at tenth in week four of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll.  Mason held atop the rankings, while St. Xavier is now along in second and Sycamore fell to third.  Like last week, ECC member Turpin is fourth and Lakota East is fifth.  Anderson, previously seventh, move back to sixth while Loveland fell to seventh. Following the loss to Milford, Moeller fell to ninth.  Walnut Hills fell out of the top ten but received eleven votes and Kings received six votes in the poll for week four.  Click HERE for the most recent area coaches’ poll.
