Loveland, Lakota East and GCTCA Tourney Await Boys Tennis

SETTING THE SCENE:  With wins over Glen Este, Anderson and Kings, Milford’s boys tennis team improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.  Another full week awaits the Eagles as take on the ECC’s Loveland and #5 Lakota East, and then head to the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Association’s annual tournament.

 

A LOOK BACK:  The Eagles started the week Tuesday by capturing their first conference win of the season, a dominating 5-0 victory over the ECC’s Glen Este.  Holden Owens, Ben Mason, and Reed Spencer each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0, as did J Kendall Morehouse and Mrigank Sharma at second singles.  Jared Gibson and Jack Eppers won at first singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Wednesday found the team looking for their second conference win at Anderson High School, and the Eagles upset the #6 ranked team with a 3-2 defeat of the Redskins.  Mason won over Feagins at second singles 6-0, 6-1, while Spencer defeated Rothfuss at third singles, 6-3, 6-1.  The second doubles team of Morehouse and Mark Ostrander secured a hard-fought win of 6-3, 7-5 over Huffman/Ray of Anderson.  Milford’s Owens, in a battle at first singles, fell 4-6, 2-6 to Anderson’s Sultan, and Gibson/Eppers lost 2-6, 2-6 to Anderson’s Loepke/Hugenberg at first doubles.

Milford’s final match of the week began Thursday at Kings, but due to rain play was resumed the following day.  The Eagles brought home a 3-2 win over the Knights in one of the more competitive dates for Milford thus far.  Mason won over Alexander 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at second singles, while at third singles Spencer defeated Mussari 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.  Morehouse/Ostrander took the second doubles match 7-5, 6-2 over Kings’ Lee/Ventre.  At first singles, Owens fought but fell to Wikum 4-6, 6-2, 2-6, and Gibson/Eppers lost to Edwards/Lockwood 2-6, 3-6.

 

A LOOK AHEAD:  The Eagles will be busy in the week ahead, taking on Loveland of the ECC as well as #5 Lakota East.  The team will also compete at the annual tournament of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association.  The seed meeting for the GCTCA, which is scheduled for 4/24, will determine seeding and locations for the tournament; check back for updated times/locations.

INSIDE THE ECC:  Milford improved 7-3 overall.  Walnut Hills leads the Eastern Cincinnati Conference at 3-0, and three conference wins for the Eagles move them up to 3-2. Turpin is currently 2-0 followed by Loveland at 2-1.  After Milford’s win streak, Anderson fell to 2-2, Kings fell to 1-3 and Glen Este remained winless at 5-0.  

Holden Owens is 7-3 overall, 2-3 in the ECC at first singles, with Ben Mason 7-3, 3-2 at second singles.  Playing third singles last week, Reed Spencer starts 3-0 with three straight ECC victories.   Jack Eppers/Jared Gibson are 4-4 overall and 1-4 in the difficult category of first doubles, while the duo of J Kendall Morehouse/Mark Ostrander (2-0) lead the Eagles at second doubles, following two ECC wins last week.

 

 

POLL WATCH:  Milford’s boys tennis team entered the area coaches’ poll at ninth in week four.  Once again, Mason, Sycamore, St. Xavier and the ECC’s Turpin maintained their positions of first through fourth, and Lakota East held steady at fifth.  Moeller joined the ECC’s Anderson and Walnut Hills in a three-way tie for sixth.  Loveland, previously ninth, fell out of the poll but received seventeen votes; Kings received eleven votes in week four.
