MHS Boys Cross Country Readies For ECC Championship
SETTING THE SCENE: The Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship will be determined this week, as runners gather at the home course of the Milford cross country teams. With a few team members fighting some nagging injuries, the Eagles landed in sixth place at last week’s Ross Invitational.
A LOOK BACK: Clayton Virzi raced to a new career best of 17.15 at the Ross Invitational, and led the Eagles by finishing 15th overall while Harris Craycraft followed at 27th with a time of 17.39. Peter Kroeger (17:51, 32nd), Sean Vonderhaar (17.57, 35th) and Luke Schneider (37th) finished together, with Schneider breaking the 18:00 mark with a career-best 17.57. Jake Young (58th, 19.21) and Cooper Stooksbury (61st, 19.37) rounded out the top seven Eagles.
Milford finished sixth of thirteen teams, with over one hundred runners. The team from Indian Hill won the event, with five of their runners finishing in the top twenty. Elder finished in second, and the ECC’s Kings placed third. Zach Birdsall of Fairfield Butler was the top individual placer, with a time of 16.21.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The Eagles will look to place in the top three this Sat., Oct. 15th at the 2016 Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championships. The Eagles finished fourth in 2015, improving from a sixth place finish in 2014.
Saturday’s meet will be held at the Eagles’ “home” course, Valley View Nature Preserve. The boys varsity run is scheduled for 9:40 am, with the open run at 11:00 am.
In addition to Milford, competing schools in the ECC include Anderson, Glen Este, Loveland, Kings, Turpin, Walnut Hills, Withrow.
INSIDE THE ECC: The boys cross country team continues to be well represented among the top runners in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference. Clayton Virzi, on the heels of his career best last week, moved up to 11th, and Harris Craycraft sits just one position behind at 12th. The rankings of Peter Kroeger (20th) and Sean Vonderhaar (22nd) remain unchanged, while Luke Schneider moved up to 33rd from 40th following his new career best at Ross.
POLL WATCH: Week seven of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll was released, and there were no changes as St. Xavier, Mason, LaSalle and Elder and Kings enter another week holding the top five positions from voting. Loveland did move up a spot to seventh, and Turpin remained at ninth. Anderson (14) is the only ECC program to receive votes; both Milford and Walnut Hills fall out of the poll with no votes for week seven.
