Milford Places 11 Among Cincinnati Enquirer Fall All-Stars
A total of 10 Milford High School student-athletes have been recognized for their outstanding performance during the fall sports season with inclusion on the 2017 Cincinnati Enquirer Fall All-Star teams. In addition to the student-athletes, football head coach Tom Grippa was tabbed the Division I Co-Coach of the Year.
Grippa led the Eagles on a historical season, the best at Milford in three decades. For the first time since 1986, Milford not only won a conference championship, but also qualified for the OHSAA Division I Playoffs. The Eagles finished the season 8-2 in the regular season, earning a three-way share of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship, before dropping a heartbreaking overtime playoff opener to Sycamore.
Bryce Dugan of the football squad was Milford’s lone All-City first team selection. Dugan had a dominating season on the defensive line, earning second team All-Ohio honors and sharing the ECC Defensive Player of the Year award. In addition to the ECC award, Dugan was also a first team all-district selection and an All-ECC first team honoree. A force on the all season long for the Eagles, finishing with a team-high 121 tackles (including 17 for loss) and an ECC-best 6.5 sacks. He also forced four fumbles, recovered one and executed a pick-six interception for a touchdown in the huge win over Anderson. In several games, Dugan pulled double-duty, seeing extended action at right guard on offense for the Eagles.
The Eagles also saw four student-athletes earn second team All-City honors in their respective sports. The Milford honorees were: Justin Horn (boys golf), Blake King (football), Tori Kittrell (girls soccer) and Lisa Sullivan (girls volleyball).
Horn, a first team All-ECC choice, highlighted his junior season by qualifying for the OHSAA Southwest District Tournament, missing a chance to compete in a playoff for a State Tournament berth by a single stroke. At the ECC Tournament, Horn shared medalist honors with Loveland’s Pete Matuszak and concluded the regular season with the best nine-hole average in the league at 38.9 for nine holes.
King was at the controls of the high-octane Eagles’ offense, finishing his senior year as a first team All-ECC selection and a second team All-District honoree. For the year, King completed 60 percent of his 309 passes for 2,342 yards and a staggering 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for 13 more scores on the ground, leading a Milford offense that ranked second in the league in scoring and third in total offense.
In her first season as a varsity player, Kittrell earned All-ECC first team honors and was an important piece of the Eagles’ defense. On offense she tacked on three goals and three assists.
Sullivan, a four-year varsity letter winner, was named first team all-conference in the ECC for the third consecutive year. Sullivan, who is committed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, ended her career with 1,162 kills, and is ranked fifth in digs and 12th in attacks and serves. Most recently Sullivan received an award from the Ohio Valley Volleyball Officials Association for her contributions to OHSAA volleyball.
Milford’s honorable mention selections for the fall were Casey Broxterman (girls golf), Jan Rae Chavez (boys water polo), Connor Foster (football), Jessica Morgan (girls soccer) and Ellen Victory (girls water polo).
