New Faces Tee Off Boys Golf Season Seeking Fourth Straight ECC Title

Posted on: August 3, 2017

SETTING THE SCENE: The 2017 Milford High School boys golf team will look to continue its tradition of excellence with a cast of new characters as the season tees off this weekend. The changes start at the top as Andy Horn has taken over as head coach for the departed Phil Sheldon. Sheldon led the Eagles to three straight league crowns and Horn will be out to keep the streak alive with a squad that returns a trio of players with varsity experience. The task will be a tall one as Horn most replace the league’s top-two ranked players from a year ago.

THE UPCOMING DOCKET: A look at Milford’s schedule for the upcoming week:

  • Saturday, Aug. 5 at Sycamore Invitational, Blue Ash GC, 12:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 8 at Anderson Invitational, Legendary Run GC, 8:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 9 at ECC Pre-season Tournament, Sharon Woods GC, 7:30 a.m.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: The 2017 Eagles will count on the contributions of a trio of returning varsity players as they look to defend three consecutive Eastern Cincinnati Conference titles. The top returnee is junior Justin Horn, a second team all-conference choice last year who ranked eighth among league players with a 40.5 average. Senior Cameron Loux is back after a strong junior campaign that saw him named All-ECC honorable mention with a 43.7 average. Fellow senior Trey Robinson was also a regular in the varsity line-up last fall and is back again in 2017. Rounding out the varsity roster are sophomores Tristin Messerschmidt and Max Steinmetz and freshman Cole Watson.

POLL WATCH: In the preseason Division I coaches’ poll sponsored by the Cincinnati Enquirer, the three-time defending ECC Champion Eagles are ranked seventh by the five voting coaches, sharing the spot with Sycamore. St. Xavier was the unanimous No. 1 squad, with Lakota East, Elder, Mason and Moeller completing the top-five. The ECC is also represented by Loveland in sixth and Anderson in the others receiving votes. The coaches’ poll is released every Monday at Noon at preps.cincinnati.com/coachespolls.
