Oak Hills Duals On Tap For MHS Wrestling

SETTING THE SCENE:  The MHS wrestling team will head to the west side this weekend, as they compete with at the Oak Hills Duals.  The team was active over the holiday break at the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association (GMVWA) Holiday Tournament. 

 

A LOOK BACK:  Milford finished 25th out of 34 large school teams at the GMVWA Holiday Tournament, held at Wright State University’s Nutter Center with 64 schools in attendance overall.

Jimmy Murphy was the top Eagle, finishing fourth in the 132 pound weight class.  After a bye in the first round, Murphy advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Lopez of Glen Este, Mohamud of Dublin Coffman, and Hughes of Miami Trace.  Murphy lost in the quarterfinals to Mitch Moore of Graham Local, who went on to win the championship.   The senior then defeated Price of Mohawk before losing to Simon Kenton’s Dante Castellano for third place.

Kobey Bronaugh’s road to the quarterfinals began with a bye as well, and was followed by wins over Loebker of Anderson and Sineff of Tecumseh.  The sophomore lost to Kleinberg of Springboro in the quarterfinal, and then to Knick of Norwood who in turn moved through the bracket to finish in fifth place in the 113 weight class.

Senior Kyle Brady, at 145, opened the tournament with wins over Swearingen of Watkins Memorial and Peck of Xenia, before a loss to Garcia of Male in the third round.  In the consolation bracket, Brady defeated Hasty of Stebbins before the loss to Edgewood’s Tevis.  Fellow senior Vance Geeslin opened the tournament with wins over Hamman of Troy and Hodapp of Eaton, but lost in round three to Wolak of Dublin Coffman.  Geeslin, at 170, defeated Edgewood’s Robinson in the consolations before taking a loss to DeHart of Covington.  Classmate Graham Martin was defeated by Campbell County’s Nelson, followed by a loss to Gross of Bellefountaine.

Following a bye in round one at 160, Tre Spillman lost in round two to Bradberry of Lakota West, and then to Freidrich of Anderson.  Derek Elliott, on the varsity mats for just the second time, was defeated by Elam of Tecumseh in round two of the 152 pound class following an opening bye.  The freshman lost to Hoening of Norwood in consolation.

A LOOK AHEAD:  The Eagles, along with ECC rivals Anderson and Glen Este, will join other teams this weekend at the Oak Hills Duals.

POLL WATCH:  Week five of the Division I Cincinnati Enquirer coaches’ poll finds some movement in the top five schools in the rankings.  While Elder maintained first, Mason and moved up to second and LaSalle fell to third.  Fairfield made a move up to fourth followed by Harrison.  The ECC’s Loveland, who was ranked fourth last week, fell to eighth, tied with Lakota East.   Milford did not receive any votes this week, nor did any other ECC wrestling programs.
