Postseason Begins for MHS Girls Tennis

Posted on: October 2, 2016

SETTING THE SCENE:  Amanda Reinhart, on the heels of her Flight C first place finish at the GCTCA, placed second at the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Tournament last week. Though the weather allowed the ECC tourney to be played the remainder of the team’s schedule was not, and the MHS girls tennis team will try again to celebrate seniors Malory Faller, Claire LaFrance, and Nicole Spencer.

A LOOK BACK:  Three of the four scheduled matches last week were cancelled/postponed due to wet courts and raining skies.  Wednesday’s match with Oak Hills, along with senior night, has been moved to Oct. 4, while the dates with St. Ursula Academy and Seton High School will not be rescheduled.

The weather held on Tues., Sept. 27th however, for the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Tournament at Lunken Playfield Tennis Courts.  The Eagles finished 5th as a team, improving upon their finish of sixth in 2015.  For the second consecutive year, Turpin won the ECC championship, but with just a two point advantage over second place Loveland.  Walnut Hills and Kings followed in third and fourth.  Milford’s fifth place finish was just one point ahead of Anderson, and Glen Este followed in seventh.

Amanda Reinhart faced Turpin’s Caitlin Fisher in the final for first singles, but Fisher took the title.  Mallory Faller placed fourth in second singles; Nicole Spencer finished sixth in third singles.  In doubles, Claire LaFrance/Emme Thomas (first singles) and Leah Breuer/Emma Neal (second singles) both finished sixth as well.

INSIDE THE ECC:  The weather prevented many of the scheduled games to take place last week, thus there was little change in the ECC standings.  Turpin remains at the top, still 6-0 in the conference and 11-6 overall.  Loveland, at 5-1 is second, followed by Walnut Hills (3-2), Kings (3-3), and Anderson at 2-4.  Milford (1-5) is sixth; Glen Este (0-5) is fifth.

Reinhart  holds at 6-0, 13-1 (not including the GCTCA/ECC tourney results), maintained her hold on ECC players at first singles.  Faler remains in third place in second singles this week; at third singles, Nicole Spencer is again tied for fifth.  Claire LaFrance-Emme Thomas are fifth in first doubles, while Leah Breuer-Emma Neal are again among a number of doubles combinations who are 1-0 in conference play.

POLL WATCH:  Just one change occurred in the final poll of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll and it involved Turpin of the ECC.  The top four remain unchanged; Mason, Sycamore, Ursuline, and Mt. Notre Dame.  Turpin, previously ranked sixth for a few weeks, improved to fifth over St. Ursula.  Loveland maintained their eighth place ranking, and Walnut Hills fell from ninth to a tie with Princeton for tenth.  Coming off a fifth place finish at the ECC tournament and Reinhart’s second place finish in first singles, Milford moved back into the poll with three votes.
