Postseason begins Saturday at Districts for girls cross county

SETTING THE SCENE:  Following a fifth place team finish at the ECC Championship meet, the Milford girls cross country team now looks ahead to the OHSAA Southwest District Championships this Saturday, Oct. 21 at Voice of America Park in West Chester.  

  

A LOOK BACK:  A trio of Lady Eagles crossed the finish together at the 2017 ECC meet.  Milford’s Andrea Armstrong led the Lady Eagles, crossing the finish in 20:47 and twenty-first place, followed closely by Emma Beck (20:48, 22nd) and Olivia Loeffler (20:51, 24th). Gretchen Feldkamp (21:28) and Lindsay Geise (21:37) both set career bests, finishing thirty-fifth and thirty-eighth respectively, while Hailey Steiner (21:59) and Brooklyn George, with a new career record of 22.17 round out the Eagles. 

The individual championship for the girls was won by Maddie Walker of West Clermont, in 17:31.  Samantha Bush of Turpin took second (17:48), and Leah Maschino of Kings was third, crossing the finish line in 18:29.  With four runners finishing in the top ten, Kings won the team championship, followed by Turpin and Anderson.  Though tied with 140 points each, Loveland edged out Milford for fourth placed based on average time.  Fifth place Milford was followed by Walnut Hills sixth, and West Clermont in seventh place.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  The 2017 OHSAA Southwest District Championships will take place on Sat., Oct. 21 at Voice of America Park in West Chester.  Voice of America Metro Park is located at 7850 VOA Park Dr, West Chester, 45069.

Two races will be held for the girls in Division I.  The Eagles are scheduled for Race A, with a 11:00 am start time.  The top four teams will advance to Regionals, as will the top sixteen individuals overall.  Teams in Race A include Ursuline Academy, Kings, Turpin, Lakota West, Milford, Sycamore, Loveland, Oak Hills, Mercy, Fairfield, West Clermont, Walnut Hills, Winton Woods, and Northwest.

Parking and Admission:

  • Parking: There will NOT be a charge for park admittance and/or parking.
  • Admission to Cross Country Course: $6.00 for all spectators (including seniors/school aged kids, and athletes/coaches not included on pass list). 

Schools participating at the Division I West Chester location for girls races include Anderson, Colerain, Fairfield, Hamilton, Harrison, Kings, Lakota East, Lakota West, Little Miami, Loveland, Mason, McAuley, Milford, Mother of Mercy, Mt. Healthy, Mt. Notre Dame, Northwest, Oak Hills, Princeton, Seton, St. Ursula Academy, Sycamore, Turpin, Ursuline Academy, Walnut Hills, West Clermont, Western Brown, and Winton Woods.

INSIDE THE ECC:  Olivia Loeffler, holds as Milford’s top runner in the ECC standings, this week tied for eighteenth.  Minor adjustments occurred for other Lady Eagles in the top third of the ECC: Andrea Armstrong (22nd), Emma Beck (26th), Hailey Steiner (50th); Lily Fleshour (68th); Brooke Stansell (69th), Gretchen Feldkamp (72nd); and Morgan Hills (78th). 

 

POLL WATCH:  In what may be a surprise to fans of girls cross country this season, Mason rose to the top of the final Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll for Division I girls cross country.  Despite remaining at the top of the poll for most of the season, Ursuline Academy will end the year in second, followed by Lakota East and a pair of ECC programs as Kings and Turpin close the season in fourth and fifth.  Lebanon, St. Ursula, Anderson, McAuley and Sycamore round out the top ten.  Loveland (4) and Walnut Hills (4) received votes in the final coaches’ poll.
