Rescheduled Senior Day, Coaches Classic Ahead For Boys Tennis

SETTING THE SCENE:  The Eagles have a full schedule for the upcoming week, including senior day when Milford will honor seniors Cameron Loux, Ben Mason, Holden Owens, Mrigank Sharma, and Reed Spencer.  The seniors will be recognized before hosting Loveland, the final Eastern Cincinnati Conference league game of the regular season.  The squad will also compete at the annual Coaches Classic Tournament, sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association.

  

A LOOK BACK:  The match scheduled with Springboro for Mon., April 17 was postponed due to weather; the teams will try again on Mon., April 23.

Milford’s boys tennis team collected their first conference win of the season on Tues., April 18 at West Clermont.  Wins in all three singles matches and at first doubles led the Eagles to a 4-1 victory over the Wolves.  Holden Owens swept Bryer 6-0, 6-0; Ben Mason won over C. Payer 6-1, 6-1; and Mark Ostrander defeated A. Payer 6-0, 6-0.  Cameron Loux and Mrigank Sharma won 6-3, 6-3 over Tan/Lawee, while Michael Faler/Steward Dalziel fell 2-6, 1-6 to West Clermont’s Ness/Kieth.

The Eagles added another to the win column with a 4-1 defeat of the Elder Panthers on Wed., April 18.  Owens dominated with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Elder’s Garnet, Mason defeated Meade 6-2, 6-4, and Ostrander extended his win streak with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Needham.  The second doubles team of Sharma/Faler fought for a 6-4, 7-5 win over Halloran/Weast, while Loux/Reed Spencer fell 4-6, 3-6 to Accurso/Hurley at first doubles.

On Thurs., April 19, Milford battled but was unable to pull out the win as they fell to the ECC’s King, 1-4.  Mason fought for Milford’s lone win with a victory over Alexander in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-3).  Ostrander nearly pulled off the upset.  After losing the first set 6-1 to Mussari, he came back with a 7-6 win to force the third, where he lost to 7-10.  Owens fell 0-6, 0-2 to Lee, one of the ECC’s leaders at first singles.  At doubles, Loux/Spencer lost to Lockwood/Jones 6-3, 7-5, while Messer/Freeman defeated Sharma/Faler 6-3, 6-0.

  

A LOOK AHEAD:  Milford will open the week trying once again to host Springboro, a match that was previously postponed due to weather.  Prior to the final ECC match with Loveland on Tues., April 24, Milford’s team and fans will celebrate seniors Cameron Loux, Ben Mason, Holden Owens, Mrigank Sharma, and Reed Spencer.  Following a non-conference date with Lakota West, the Eagles will play in the annual Coaches Classic Tournament.  Locations and times for the Coaches Classic will be announced following the flight/seed meeting held on April 23.

INSIDE THE ECC: With the win over West Clermont, Milford improved to 1-4 in the ECC, and 4-6 overall.  Turpin’s win over Anderson moved them to 5-0 in the league while Anderson fell to 4-1, followed by Loveland at 3-2, Walnut Hills at 3-3, and Kings at 2-3. West Clermont has yet to win an ECC match and stands at 0-5.

Owens improved to 2-3, 4-6 overall at first singles. Mason improved to 3-2 in the ECC and 6-4 overall at second singles, while Ostrander improve to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the ECC.  Records of Milford doubles teams: Loux/Sharma (1-0, 1-1) Spencer/Loux (0-3, 1-5), and Spencer/Sharma (0-1, 0-2) all at first doubles; and Falter/Sharma (1-2, 3-2) and Faler/Dalziel (0-2, 0-5) at second doubles.

  

POLL WATCH:  There were few changes in the top ten of the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll for week five.  Mason, St. Xavier, Sycamore, the ECC’s Turpin and Lakota East, Anderson and Loveland remained the top seven teams.   Milford, previously ranked tenth, fell out of the top ten but received eight votes.  Walnut Hills (7) and Kings (5) received votes as well.
