Riding Strong Start, Swim & Dive Squads Head To Butler Invite, Host West Clermont

SETTING THE SCENE: The final two events before Christmas vacation are next on the docket for the Milford High School swimming and diving teams as they look to build on a strong start to the 2017-18 season. On the boys side, the Eagles are coming off of back-to-back Eastern Cincinnati Conference victories over Kings and Anderson, while the girls picked up a split against the same. The next stretch starts on Saturday at the Butler Invitational at Wright State University, before a first-ever home meet against West Clermont on Wednesday night.

  • Wednesday, Dec. 20 vs. West Clermont, Milford HS, 6:00 p.m.

 

THE BOYS REPORT: Following the season-opening Mason Invite, the Eagles pulled off head-to-head Eastern Cincinnati Conference wins over Kings (90-81) and Anderson (99-87). The victories came against squads both ranked in the top-10 in this week’s Cincinnati Enquirer’s Division I poll.

 

Junior Sam Leatherwood had a huge day in the pool for the Eagles on Dec. 9 against Kings, picking up two individual victories and swimming anchor leg of two winning relay squads. Individually, Leatherwood finished first in the 200 IM (2:10.07) and 100 backstroke (57.75). His first relay came grouped with senior Branham Leavens, freshman Porter Bausch and junior Nathan Klick when the Eagle foursome took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.67. Later, Leatherwood joined Leavens, Bausch and senior Jan Rae Chavez to top the 400 freestyle race in 3:36.02.

 

Bausch also grabbed an individual win the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in a winning time of 2:03.49.

 

The trip to Anderson was a fruitful one as the Eagles claimed top honors in six individual races and a pair of relays. All-American Tyler Babinec made his season debut with a win in the 200 IM (2:02.54) and was one of three Eagles to score an individual win as well as a pair of relay crowns. Sam Leatherwood kept his run of wins going, this time in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:56.02. Chase Fisher won the 50 free in 22:30, then teamed with Leatherwood, senior Branham Leavens and Babinec to tally wins in both the 200 freestyle (1:30.34) and 400 freestyle relays (3:23.89).

 

Milford also got individual victories from junior Dylan Vearil in the 500 free (5:14.61), senior Matt Schnelle in the 100 back (1:08.41) and junior David Niehaus in the 100 breast (1:08.14).

 

THE GIRLS REPORT: The girls week got off to a tough start against an outstanding Kings squad, falling 112-57. Junior Lauren Bell picked up the lone victory for Milford, topping the 100 freestlye in 58.34.

 

The Eagles quickly bounced back though, knocking off Anderson 97-86 on the strength of five individual victories and three relay crowns. One of the wins came in the diving portion of the competition where Sophie Cooper was judged the winner with a score of 183.65.

 

Junior Lauren Bell had her second straight strong meet, winning the 500 freestyle in 5:56.13 and competing on three winning relay squads. The first winning relay was comprised of Lauren Clark, Bell, Cora Striet and Megan Krieger who took the 200 medley race in 2:03.36. The quartet also took the 400 free relay in 4:04.21. The winning 400 freestyle relay group of Clark, Ellen Victory, Bell and Krieger also won in 1:52.92.

 

Other individual winners for the Eagles were Krieger in the 200 freestyle (2:13.01) and senior Megan Hardewig in the 100 breast (1:23.56).

 

POLL WATCH: The boys team are one of three teams making up the others receiving votes section of the Dec. 11th edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s area Division I coaches’ poll. Only two coaches filled out ballots, with both giving No. 1 to St. Xavier. The rest of the top-five features Sycamore, Lakota East, Moeller and Anderson. Kings and Turpin from the ECC share seventh with Loveland joining the Eagles in the others section.

 

The girls squad did not receive any votes in this week’s poll. St. Ursula earned the only No. 1 vote that was cast ahead of Mason, Kings of the ECC, Ursuline and Lakota West. The ECC is also represented by Turpin in sixth and Walnut Hills in eighth.
