Softball Team Falls In Epic District Championship

Posted on: May 20, 2017

Three times the Milford High School softball team rallied from a deficit, but couldn’t do it a fourth time as the Eagles fell to Lakota West by a 7-6 score in 11 action-packed innings in the OHSAA Southwest District Finals. The game was halted by rain with the score tied at four in the sixth inning on Friday and ultimately completed on Saturday.

The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead on the only Ohio team to defeat them during a memorable season, but a series of miscues led to four Firebird runs in the fifth pushing West to a three-run lead. Sparked by a two-run single by Katelyn Rheude in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles charged back to tie the score 4-4 before heavy rains moved in and forced the postponement.

Facing elimination after falling behind 5-4 after play resumed, the Eagles stayed alive with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The scenario repeated itself in the 10th after West scratched out a run in the top of the inning, only to see the Eagles again knot the score at six in the bottom half.

Unfortunately, the 11th and final inning went the way of the Firebirds as they scored the 7-6 victory.

The 2017 season concluded with the Eagles posting a final record of 26-3 and a fourth straight Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship.
