Swim & Dive Teams Square Off With Pair Of ECC Foes In Days Ahead

SETTING THE SCENE: The beginning of the dual meet season, delayed after a maintenance issue at the MHS Natatorium earlier this week, is on the horizon for the Milford High School swim and dive teams as the Eagles meet a pair of Eastern Cincinnati Conference rivals upcoming. The slate begins on Saturday morning, with a swimming-only event at home against Kings. The start to next week will feature a trip to Anderson for a 6:00 p.m. head-to-head meeting that will include diving. The Eagles opened the 2017-18 season last Saturday at the Mason Invitational.


THE UPCOMING DOCKET: A look at Milford’s upcoming schedule:

  • Saturday, Dec. 9 vs. Kings, Milford HS, 9:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Anderson, Anderson HS, 6:00 p.m.


THE BOYS REPORT: Seniors Jan Rae Chavez and Branham Leavens each qualified for the finals in a pair of events to lead the boys team at the Mason Invitational. Leavens had the top finish among the Milford individuals when he took eighth in the 100 freestyle in 53.86. He also finished 11th in the consolation final of the 100 breaststroke, timing in at 1:11.17. Chavez participated in two consolation finals with finishes of 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.53) and 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.05). The Eagles also put two relay squads in the championship finals, earning fifth in the 400 freestyle (3:40.55) and sixth in the 200 medley (1:51.95). As a team, the Eagles placed eighth in the 19-team field.


THE GIRLS REPORT: The Eagles’ family act, Jill and Megan Krieger were at the forefront of Milford’s season opener at the Mason Invitational as they combined to reach three finals. Junior Megan had a big day, placing fifth overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.84, while qualifying for the consolation final in the 50 freestyle where she placed 10th in 26.85. Jill was also a consolation finalist in the 100 breaststroke where she stopped the clock in 1:19.94 to take 12th. The Eagles finished 15th as a team in a field of 21 squads.


POLL WATCH: The boys team has moved into a share for eighth place in the first weekly Division I area coaches’ poll of the year. Milford shares the position with ECC rival Turpin. St. Xavier continues to hold the top spot by a slim one-point margin, while holding two of the three top spot votes. Mason, Moeller (one No. 1 vote), Sycamore and Lakota West round out the top-five. Other ECC squads in the rankings include Anderson in seventh, along with Walnut Hills and Kings receiving votes.


The girls squad is one of four teams among others receiving votes. Mason picked up both of the No. 1 votes to take the top spot ahead of St. Ursula, Ursuline, Kings of the ECC and Lakota East in the top-five. The ECC is also represented by Turpin in a tie for seventh, with Walnut Hills and Anderson joining Milford in the others receiving votes.
