Swim/Dive Teams To Take Part In This Weekend’s Southwest Classic

  • Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 19-20, Southwest Classic Finals, Keating Natatorium, 6:30 p.m.

 

A NOTE ABOUT THE CLASSIC: The 34th annual Southwest Classic Swim Meet is a unique two-day event featuring teams from all over Southwest Ohio. Each day begins at one of nine locations with preliminary action. Then, later each night, action shifts to St. Xavier’s Keating Natatorium for the finals, pitting the best of the best. THE BOYS REPORT: January 2 vs. Turpin: Milford won four individual races and a pair of relays, but came up just short of Turpin, falling by a 92-78 score to the Spartans. Senior Tyler Babinec was the star of the day, winning a pair of individual races and contributing to two freestyle triumphs as well.

 

A look at Milford’s winners against Turpin:

  • 200 freestyle: Chase Fisher 1:49.29
  • 200 IM: Dylan Vearil 2:11.40
  • 50 freestyle: Tyler Babinec 21.66
  • 100 butterfly: Tyler Babinec 53.70
  • 200 freestyle relay: Tyler Babinec, Sam Leatherwood, Nathan Klick, Chase Fisher 1:32.46
  • 400 freestyle relay: Evan Fentress, Tyler Babinec, Sam Leatherwood, Chase Fisher 3:18.11

 

January 5 at Milford Invitational: The Eagles won their own Milford Invitational in a big way, taking victory in all but one of the 11 swimming events. Individually, seniors Tyler Babinec and Chase Fisher each won a pair of races. Milford scored 890.5 points during the event, topping ECC foe West Clermont by nearly 600 points.

  • 50 freestyle: Tyler Babinec 22.16
  • 100 freestyle: Chase Fisher 47.85
  • 200 freestyle: Chase Fisher 1:49.15

THE GIRLS REPORT: January 2 vs. Turpin: Lauren Clark earned a win and a runner-up and Lauren Bell finished second twice as Milford fell to Turpin 126-44.

  • 200 freestyle: Lauren Bell 2nd 2:13.95
  • 100 butterfly: Lauren Clark 2nd 1:08.91

January 5 at Milford Invitational: Milford won five events to dominate its own invitational. The Eagles finished with 651.5 team points to best a nine-team field. Vandalia Butler picked up second with 474.5 points.

  • 100 backstroke: Lauren Clark 1:05.42

BABINEC SCORES WELL AT PRO SERIES EVENT: Senior Tyler Babinec had a successful performance at the first Pro Swim Series meet of 2019 at the University of Tennessee. Competing in five events, Babinec placed among the top-25 swimmers in four races, including a best of 12th in the 100 breaststroke.

 

Representing the Mason Manta Rays club, Babinec took to the UT pool to participate against some of the nation’s best. His best swim of the meet came in the 100 breast when he stopped the clocks in 1:03.96 to place 12th. He also grabbed a top-15 in the 50 breast, placing 14th in 29.22.

 

In the 200 breast, Babinec took 18th in 2:23.76. His other finishes were 23rd in the 200 IM (2:16.90) and 29th in the 50 free (24.67).
