On Wednesday night, January 25, 2017, the girl’s basketball programs from Milford High School and Turpin High School staged their second Eastern Cincinnati Conference match-up of the season. While the final score indicated a 42-28 Turpin victory, even the Spartans would agree that the biggest winner of the night was The Cure Starts Now Foundation. This game wasn’t just any game between two area rivals; instead it was the third annual Game of Hope and when all the pomp and circumstance of the evening was complete, a total of $5,000 was raised to benefit the fight against cancer.

The history of the Game of Hope spans three seasons and countless thousands of dollars raised. The second contest each season between the Eagles and Spartans features both teams, both schools and both communities uniting with one goal, to bring awareness to the fight against cancer, while also remembering those that are fighting or have come up short in the battle with the deadly disease.

This season’s match-up saw the Milford Gymnasium transformed into a sea of purple and grey as fans and community members of both schools packed the stands. Prior to the game, representatives from each of the schools gathered at mid-court to present Lisa Hill, the mother of the late Lauren Hill, a special pillow made in commemoration of the Game of Hope series. Then, fans were invited to stand and hold purple signs adorned with the name of someone they wanted to provide hope to; whether it was someone currently fighting cancer, their caregivers or in remembrance of someone who was no longer in pain.

In addition to all of the on-court, pre-game pageantry, special fundraising stations were set up outside the MHS Gymnasium, including basket raffles, sales of specially made Game of Hope t-shirts, a bake sale, split the pot and the always popular Lay-up for Lauren booth provided by The Cure Starts Now.

For the hundreds of fans in the stands and the players, coaches and officials on the court at the third annual Game of Hope, years from now, few will likely remember the final score on the actual game. It will be another victory in the battle to fight cancer that will be front of mind for those that were in attendance.
