Tri-Meet, Milford Invitational Upcoming For Swim & Dive Teams

SETTING THE SCENE: With an invitational win and a dual win by both teams in its last two outings, the Milford High School swimming and diving teams will be out to continue its run of success with two events in a three-day upcoming span. The Eagles will travel to Turpin on Thursday night for an Eastern Cincinnati Conference tri-meet with the host Spartans and Loveland. Then on Saturday, it’s the annual Milford Invitational inside the confines of the MHS Natatorium.

THE BOYS REPORT: Dec. 16 at Butler Invitational: For the second straight year, Milford captured the Butler Invitational, this season besting a field of eight other teams. Over the course of 11 events, the Eagles qualified 13 individuals and five relay squads to the finals to win the team championship.

 

Junior Tyler Babinec was the big winner of the day for Milford as he was victorious in both of his individual races. In the 100 breaststroke, Babinec stopped the clock in 1:00.49, while his time of 1:59.43 in the 200 IM was the best of the finals. Classmate Chase Fisher also scored a victory, taking the 100 freestyle in a time of 49.02 and followed that up with a runner-up in the 50 freestyle in 22.31.

 

The 200 freestyle relay squad was also a winner as it finished first in 1:33.97, while the 400 freestyle team finished second in 3:22.36. Junior Sam Leatherwood also earned a pair of podium finishes, taking second in the 100 backstroke (54.97) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:51.83).

 

Dec. 20 vs. West Clermont: The Eagles were able to pull off a clean sweep of West Clermont in the first-ever meeting with their newest ECC rival, winning all 12 events en route to a 147-34 win. Junior Tyler Babinec was the big winner of the day for Milford, winning two individual races and competing on two winning relay squads. Babinec’s day kicked off with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:41.06), joining Chase Fisher, Sam Leatherwood and Branham Leavens in scoring the victory. Then, Milford’s reigning All-American went on to capture individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:49.24) and 500 freestyle (5:00.47). The same foursome closed the day with a win in the 400 free relay, stopping the clock in 3:21.69.

 

Junior Dylan Vearil also had a big day, scoring three overall wins, including a pair of individual races. Vearil posted the day’s top time in the 100 freestyle (53.30) and 100 backstroke (1:01.76), while swimming the anchor leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:37.85). Joining Vearil on the winning relay were Matt Schnelle, Jan Rae Chavez and David Niehaus.

 

Other Eagles to post wins against the Wolves included: Niehaus (200 IM-2:16.38), Fisher (50 freestyle-21.98), Carter Ferguson (1m Diving-145.40), Leavens (100 butterfly-1:02.55) and Chavez (100 breaststroke-1:07.96).

 

THE GIRLS REPORT: Dec. 16 at Butler Invitational: The girls team also became repeat winners of the Butler Invitational as they topped eight other teams to take the title. The Eagles used nine podium finishes and 22 finals qualifiers to seal the win.

 

Juniors Lauren Bell and Megan Krieger led the way for the Eagles as each picked up a pair of top-three finishes. Bell’s best finish came in the 100 breaststroke when she touched the wall in 1:15.87 to take second. Later, she tallied a third place finish in the 200 IM with a mark of 2:28.28. Krieger came out the gates firing with a 27.24 time in the 50 freestyle, good for second and after a short turnaround, a third place effort in the 100 freestyle at 1:00.02.

 

Senior Megan Hardewig took third in the 200 freestyle in 2:14.09, while junior Lauren Clark was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.14. The 400 freestyle relay was a particularly good event for the Eagles as they took second and third place with times of 4:00.68 and 4:12.76. Milford also enjoyed a third place finish from the 200 medley relay team in 2:04.68.

 

Dec. 20 vs. West Clermont: Milford took wins in 10 of 12 victories to top West Clermont by a 135-45 score in the squad’s first meeting with the newest member of the ECC. A pair of juniors in Lauren Bell and Lauren Clark led the way for the Eagles as each won two individual titles and contributed to a pair of winning relays.

 

Bell started her day with a win in the 100 butterfly (1:08.86), while also chalking up first place in the 100 backstroke (1:09.65). Clark’s individual victories came in the 100 freestyle (1:00.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.95). Both were also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:49.47) with Ellen Victory and Megan Krieger, while joining Krieger and Cora Striet in winning the 400 free relay (4:06.80).

 

Victory was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team (2:14.95) along with Madelyn Payne, Stephanie Karan and Acacia Spencer. Krieger added to her relay win with a triumph in the 500 freestyle, stopping the clock in 5:52.66.

 

Other winners for the Eagles included Halle Fontaine (200 freestyle-2:17.83) and Jill Krieger (200 IM-2:37.29).

 

POLL WATCH: The boys team is one of a handful of teams making up the others receiving votes section of the latest edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s area Division I coaches’ poll, released on Jan. 2. Only two coaches filled out ballots, with third place Kings and sixth place St. Xavier earning the top votes. Mason was ranked No. 1 this week, followed by Sycamore and then a three-way tie between Elder, Kings and Lakota East. The ECC is also represented by Turpin in a tie for eighth, along with Anderson and Walnut Hills also receiving votes.

 

The girls squad also received votes in this week’s poll. The three first place votes that were cast were split between the ECC’s Mason, St. Ursula and Kings who make up the top-three spots. Lebanon and Seton round out the top-five. The ECC is well represented with Anderson and Loveland part of a three-way tie for sixth and Turpin in a tie for ninth.
