Unified Track & Field Team Debuts At Milford

Posted on: June 19, 2019

Earlier this year, Milford High School joined the list of area schools that sponsored a Unified Track Team. Thanks to the efforts of MHS Intervention Specialist Jerry Comello, the Eagles were able to help five special needs students enjoy the thrill of competing in track & field.

Unified Sports® was first developed by Special Olympics as a means of providing a quality experience of sports training and competition in an inclusive environment that allows friendships to form. It is the vision of this joint MEVSD / Special Olympics Ohio to allow high school students with and without intellectual disabilities to collectively represent their high school in an OHSAA sanctioned activity by participating together on a Unified Track and Field Team.

The five members of Milford’s Unified Team competed at the Eagles’ home meet on April 25 with their typical peers. Congratulations to Michael Gilhooley, Javon Penny-Robinson, Kique Estrada, Tristan Maier and Katie Smith for competing. A huge thanks to Mr. Comello and all of the Eagles that mentored these five during the spring. Click here to see a video of the team’s 100 meter race.

Milford also took part in a United Sound Program during the spring. This program paired up special needs students with members of the MHS band, teaching them how to play an instrument. The group conducted a memorable performance at the Teacher of the Year dinner in late April.
