Water Polo Set For Split Weekend At Coney Island, Ohio Cup

Posted on: September 13, 2018

SETTING THE SCENE: This weekend will see the Milford High School water polo squads split up for action at two different locations. After the boys team made the trip north to Columbus last week for the Ohio Cup, this week the girls will get the same opportunity, again at Worthington Pools. Meanwhile, for the second straight season, the boys will get a unique opportunity as they will compete in the St. Xavier Invitational in the waters of the Starlite Pool at Coney Island.

The days ahead also feature action on Tuesday night at St. Xavier with the girls playing the Cincinnati Mavericks club and the boys battling the host Bombers.

THE BOYS REPORT: The Milford boys squad traveled to Columbus last weekend, finishing the trip with a 1-2-1 record at the annual Ohio Cup. After dropping consecutive games to open play (10-4 to Thomas Worthington and 12-1 to Chicago Park), the Eagles rebounded with a tie and a win in their final two. A 7-7 tie against Napoleon wrapped up Saturday play, before the team finished with a 14-10 win over Sylvania on Sunday. Milford concluded the event with an overall season record of 3-9-1.

Junior Matthew Marks was the top weekend performer for the Eagles, recording at least one steal in every game and totaling 12 goals. His best game came in the Sylvania win where he scored six goals, while adding three against Napoleon, two against Worthington and one vs. Chicago Park.

THE GIRLS REPORT: The girls team has won four of its last six contests to improve to 6-6 on the season. In their most recent outing, the Eagles knocked off Mason by a 9-5 score. Milford’s Ohio Cup schedule starts on Saturday with pool play before moving onto championship play on Sunday pending the results of the day prior. A look at Milford’s Saturday slate:

  • 11:00 a.m. vs. Mason High School
  • 2:00 p.m. vs. Thomas Worthington High School
  • 5:00 p.m. vs. Napoleon High School
