Water Polo Squads Face Busy Stretch With Weekend Tournament, Tuesday Home Games
SETTING THE SCENE: The next few days will be full of action for the Milford High School water polo teams as they take to the road this weekend for tournament action, before retuning to the MHS Natatorium for a night full of play next Tuesday. The highlight of this weekend will see the girls team (3-11) head to the Columbus area for the prestigious Ohio Cup. The boys (2-10), meanwhile will stay closer to home when they head over to North Bend Road for St. Xavier’s Invitational. When the calendar flips to Tuesday, the girls squad will play host to the Cincinnati Mavericks, while the boys will host St. Xavier.
THE BOYS REPORT: Ohio Cup Game 1 vs. Worthington: The Eagles opened Ohio Cup play facing a tall task as they faced the state’s No. 2 ranked team, falling to Worthington by an 18-5 score.
Ohio Cup Game 2 vs. St. Xavier: Facing a familiar local foe in St. Xavier, the Eagles couldn’t put together the winning formula as they fell by a 13-4 final score.
Ohio Cup Game 3 vs. Upper Arlington: The first day of pool play at the Ohio Cup ended in disappointing fashion for Milford as they dropped an 18-3 decision to Upper Arlington.
Ohio Cup Game 4 vs. Sylvania: After a long and frustrated opening day of play, Milford came back on the second day of action and snagged a victory, toppling Sylvania by an 18-3 score.
Coach Metzger on the weekend: “Our boys are learning to play a more aggressive and physical game of water polo. With this, they must learn how to handle more aggressive and physical teams. We have a very good boys team, but we need to start working together. This week in practice we have been focusing on a motion offense that should help offset some of the strong defense we face each game. After a long conversation and review of film on Saturday night, the boys rallied for a win against Sylvania on Sunday morning.”
THE GIRLS REPORT: Sycamore Invite Game 1 vs. Napoleon: Milford’s start at the Sycamore Invitational didn’t go as planned as the Eagles dropped a 12-2 decision to Napoleon. Ellen Victory played a solid game, netting both of the Eagles’ goals, while adding four steals on defense. Acacia Spencer also added four steals for the Eagles.
Sycamore Invite Game 2 vs. Mason: The Eagles earned a big victory, knocking off Mason for the first time this season by a 10-7 score. Stephanie Karan and Ellen Victory were goal scorers for Milford with the former adding a team-best eight steals.
Sycamore Invite Game 3 vs. Sycamore: Ellen Victory again led the Eagles on both ends of the pool as Milford closed tournament play with a 10-2 setback to the host Aviators.
Coach Metzger on the weekend: “Our team showed so much growth this weekend compared to our previous tournaments this season. Our win against Mason is proof that our girls are learning in practice and playing to be a more physical team. I look forward to seeing what they do at Ohio Cup.”
POLL TALK: In the latest Ohio High School Water Polo rankings, both Eagles squads are ranked 10th in the state. The rankings are computed with a unique formula where teams earn two points for a winning record in a series against any Ohio team. If the series is tied, each team will earn one point. A team will earn zero points for a losing record in a series. The number of points is divided by the number of series played for an overall score. Games against non-Ohio teams do not count in the rankings but are reported in the overall record.
