Boys Golf Tees Off New Season With Three Tournaments In Week Ahead

SETTING THE SCENE: The Milford High School boys golf team will be the first Eagle squad to begin competition when they take to a trio of area courses over the next several days for the start to the 2018 season. After winning three consecutive conference championships, Milford finished tied for third in the league rankings last year. Four letterwinners, including district qualifier Justin Horn return to the course for second-year head coach Andy Horn.


THE UPCOMING DOCKET: A look at Milford’s schedule for the upcoming week:

  • Saturday, Aug. 4 at Sycamore Invitational, Blue Ash GC, 12:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Anderson Invitational, Legendary Run GC, 8:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 8 at ECC Preseason Tournament, Glenview GC, 7:30 a.m.


A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Senior Justin Horn, an OHSAA District Tournament qualifier and first team All-Eastern Cincinnati Conference selection last year is back to lead the Eagles this fall. Horn was outstanding as a junior, narrowly missing a berth in the state tournament by a single stroke, leading the ECC in scoring (38.9) and sharing medalist honors at the ECC Tournament.


Other returning letterwinners for the Eagles include juniors Tristin Messerschmidt (48.3) and Max Steinmetz (46.1), along with sophomore Cole Watson (45.1). Watson’s play as a freshman earned him honorable mention All-ECC honors last fall.


POLL WATCH: Milford is one of a handful of teams receiving votes in the Cincinnati Enquirer Division I area coaches’ preseason poll. Lakota East holds the top spot in the rankings with three of the four first place votes cast. St. Xavier took second, with Elder (one first place vote), Mason and Loveland from the ECC rounding out the top-five. The league is also represented by Turpin in eighth, Anderson in ninth and Kings among the others receiving votes. The coaches’ poll is released every Monday at Noon at
