Eagles Handle Business, Set Up Showdown With Winton Woods

Posted on: September 29, 2023

The beat rolls on for Milford and a showdown is imminent as the Eagles handled their business on Homecoming knocking off Walnut Hills by a 41-7 score to improve to 7-0 on the season. The stage is now set for one of the biggest regular season match-ups in school history as next week Milford puts its unblemished mark on the line against a Warriors squad that is 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the ECC.

But before looking forward to next week, Milford had to take care of Walnut Hills and the Eagles wasted little time, scoring on their first three drives and suffocating the Walnut offense for much of the night. Junior QB Luke Brand was an efficient 14 of 19 passing for 224 yards with touchdowns to three different receivers, while adding a fourth score on the ground. Milford’s D allowed just 136 yards of total offense and contributed to the scoring as well on Andrew Littrell’s third quarter interception return for a TD.

After a Walnut three and out to start the game, it took Milford just three Brand to Ashton Warther completions to move 59 yards, capped by a 16-yard reception by the speedy senior for a 7-0 Milford lead. Following another Walnut three and out, it took Milford just two snaps to score again, this time on a 27-yard scoring grab by Reece Davis. A third quick stop of the quarter by the Milford D set the stage for a drive keyed by Nathan Webster who gained 33 yards, culminating in a one-yard plunge to make the score 21-0 after just 12 minutes.

The hosts threatened to go up by four scores early in the second quarter, but Walnut rose up with a goal line stand to stymie the Milford attack. Following another punt by the visitors, Brand found Ethan Melgard for a 33-yard catch-and-run for the final score of the half. Walnut actually put together a nice drive in the waning seconds of the second, but came up 11 yards short of a score.

Melgard and Webster came up big on first drive of the third quarter with gains of 24 and 22 yards respectively to set up Milford deep in Walnut Hills territory. Brand used his legs for the final three yards to put the home team up comfortably at 35-0.

Littrell made the next big play for Milford with Walnut deep in its own territory picking off a short pass and jetting seven yards into the end zone for his second career touchdown. Walnut wrapped up the night’s scoring with a Zion James rushing touchdown with under five minutes remaining.

A short night for Webster saw the senior finish with a team-high 66 rushing yards while Melgard topped the Milford receiving crew with a career-best 70 yards through the air. Littrell tacked on a team-best six tackles, including one for loss, along with a pass defended to his INT.
