GIRLS VOLLEYBALL OPENS EVENTFUL WEEK WITH EAGLE NIGHT PREVIEW
SETTING THE SCENE: New Head Coach Amy Gill takes over Milford’s girls varsity volleyball program for the 2018 season. Most recently, Gill was the head coach of the girls varsity program at Miami Valley Christian Academy, where she received the OVAC Coach of the Year Award in both 2013 and 2014.
The Eagles ended the 2017 regular season at 8-15 overall and with a 3-11 conference record, seventh in the ECC. Coach Gill believes this young team has great potential and returning players will provide leadership for the upcoming season.
TEAM PREVIEW: The 2018 Lady Eagles return senior Erica Sharp, a middle hitter who received All-ECC second team honors in 2016. Junior setter Abby Thierauf returns for her third year on the varsity squad; she received all-conference honorable mention in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference in both 2016 and 2017. Lindsay Strathman, is expected to play outside hitter in her senior season.
The Varsity roster includes seniors Molly Buck and Cami Mallott, juniors Kristen Bales and Grace Merten, and sophomores Julia Gill, Maddie Cogan, Kennedy Robinson and Morgan Whitaker. Freshmen Alani Anoa’i and Emily Morgan are also expected to see playing time on the varsity squad.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The Lady Eagles will open the season with three straight non-conference contests on the road including Talawanda, Sycamore and Western Brown. Milford will end the week with their first match on the home court, a date with McNicholas who tied for #1 in the Division II preseason voting.

POLL WATCH: There were a few changes in the top five of the area coaches’ poll for week one as the season is now underway. Ursuline Academy and Mt. Notre Dame remained the top two teams, while Mercy McAuley and Mason rose to third the fourth respectfully as St. Ursula fell from third to fifth. The ECC’s Loveland fell to seventh, and Turpin fell to ninth. Anderson dropped out of the top ten but received votes (10), joined by West Clermont (14), Kings (6) and Walnut Hills (3). Preseason poll: Ursuline Academy opens the year atop the Cincinnati Enquirer Division I preseason coaches’ poll, a position that had been held by Mt. Notre Dame for least the past three years and who will enter the season at second. St. Ursula, Mercy McAuley and Mason round out the top five. The ECC’s Loveland will begin in sixth while Turpin enters at eighth and Anderson in tenth. West Clermont (9), Kings (4) and Walnut Hills (3) each received votes in the preseason poll.
